Default Replacement keys

When I recently purchased my 996 it came with only one key. It looks like the dealer is the only option to have a new one programed? What about cutting the key? Has anyone here purchased keys from another source and had the dealer cut and program them? ..or is that like going to a restuarant and bring your own steak? If you had a key cut and programmed how much it it cost you?

Keyhead ~$120 @ Sunset Porsche, Blade cut to your digital photo (it works!) ~$20 Keysinthepost.com, programming @ dealer 1hr. labor ~$100. DO NOT buy a used keyhead/one without a code tag - your car cannot be programmed to accept it.

Yes, the blade snaps into the keyhead. Above procedure will save you ~200 bucks.

Ohhh my wife a ( miss placed ) her set when we were on vacation last year... going through the dealer it was almost 600$ I got it done by my local indy for around 240. The key ,fob & programing i was relieved.

Independent Garage. But it's rare to find one that has a connection with a Porsche dealership that will supply the code info (that has to be retrieved from Porsche NA). One Nut was lucky (and probably has forgiven the wife by now).

I think I have the code on a document the previous owner supplied. Can someone use that to make a key?

The code you are referring to is probably the radio anti-theft code.....

Cutting the key blade is no problem...it's the code that is supplied with the replacement keyhead (transponder) that has to programmed into the car's computer along with a series of codes from Porsche with a special device (PIWIS). Ordinarily it has to be done by a dealer, but in rare instances by an indy with the right device and connections to a dealer. Take both keys along, the original has to confirmed as part of the process.

The car is programmed to the key head and the code for each head is different. The supplied code may be for the working key that you have.

When you go to have the new one programmed you must bring the working key so that they can match it with its code, that code has been previously programmed to the car and there are probably more than one stored in the car. If you don't do that you will have a new working key and an old worthless key head.

The head has an RFID pill, black pill "loose" in the head and a, 15? integer, transmitter code both have to be formally introduced to the car.

I would love to scrap all the security in this thing and just have a key with a remote and no alarm at all. Has anyone ever done that?

Probably cost much more than just getting the new key.

Looks like you have the transponder codes for three keys and transmitter codes for two. Makes sense. The valet key has no transmitter. Just transponder (pill)
