Default Are auto and manual trans engines interchangeable?

Does the flywheel and flex plate share the same bolt pattern to make them interchangeable?

As am I but I know Audi makes the crank to fw/plate bolt pattern different. I want to be sure before I buy a auto engine.

The EFI system will be different, as will the ECU module. There are different engine control aspects with a manual vs an automatic, sudden off-throttle, for instance, the engine w/automatic will have a different provision for this vs....

But "core", short block, will be the same.

You mean long block. Short block is without the heads and long block is with it.

If you check on car-part.com, it doesn't ask the type of trnasmission. If it mattered, it would ask.

The pilot bearing is in the flywheel.

It is the same engine. Porsche consolidated replacement engines in 2000. Only option for 2001 and earlier is e-gas vs. non-egas. There is a TSB which covers what does and does not get plugged for vac lines. Manual trans tie wrap the wiring for the ATF switch-over cooling valve. BTDT

Pic of housing Txhokie mentioned (MT housing swapped for core return). Second pic is old Tip housing transferred to shiny new factory replacement. You will just need to swap your MT housing to the new engine. Very simple, only a couple of bolts.

Just to be clear on this, the thermostat is not in the housing. That'just a coolant elbow.

The cooling elbow posted is a year change, not related to transmission. If I remember correctly, late 03+ cars use a clip at that joint, earlier cars use hose clamps.

Alternator pulley (decoupling on manual cars) some engine mapping and a vacuum line are all I recall to be different between the two motors.
