Default Annoying rattle...single click when slowing down

2000 996 C2

in any revs range I get a single metalic click.... WHEN IM USING THE ENGINE TO SLOW DOWN or release the gas pandle in any gear.

For example when I am driving in the city in 3rd gear (6 speed manual). Once the gas paddle is released quickly, there's a single metallic click as when the car changes in momentem.

Very similar metallic rattle (few clicks in a row) happend when driving up in a multi-stories parking lot from L1 to L2 (both heading up or down)

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Default OK, I'll bite.

My guess would be one of the CV joints. As a CV joint loads and unloads based on the throttle inputs, I can imagine a worn CV making such a sound.

I would recommend putting it on a frame lift, and then pushing/tugging on the rear wheels to check for excessive play; i.e., a possible sign of CV wear.

( I assume the car is a C2. If a C4, then many more possibilities exist.)

do you have ANY idea what area of the car the sound is coming from?

inside - outside, front back up down - I mean your post is super vague

Thanks so much for your reply relinuca.

Yes, it's a 2000 C2.

The metal click is from the rear bottom, somewhere at the rear wheel area.

Actually went to a local mechanics and he recommended to have the drive shaft replaced, I think it's a set of two to be replaced together and the quotation is $1000 each x 2 + Labour. That's quitea a lot for me, is that sound reasonable? and Worth replacing them?

For the same rattle, I've already repalced the rear lower control arms and bushings. Don't want to take the chance to spend even more until I am more sure if it'll really resolved the issue.

Thanks again guys

Relinuca I think has it. CV bearings or flywheel but I think the symptoms point to the former.

Get the car in the air supported by its tires and see if you or a mech. can spot any play.

CV boots split or torn or worse is a good sign that bad things have happened to the CV bearings.

If the bearings are bad replacement is the only option I know of. Cost is around $900/shaft based on a quote I received for my Boxster.

There is I believe a place offering half shafts for less. I know nothing about this place -- not even its name for since I didn't need half shafts I forgot it -- but it might be worth checking out after you are sure the bearings are shot and can't be replaced and new half shafts are needed.

My '99 C2 would do that and it turned out to be a crusie control part. CC was revised by '01 but I don't know about 2000.

Thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated. Let me do some more research about the bearings.
Keep the ideas coming....

Could it be worn engine mounts?
