I recently purchased a 1999 996 C4 with 82k miles. Apparently the motor was replaced by Porsche under warranty at about 34k miles. I have to assume a warranty engine replacement would only be for a catastrophic failure of some sort - like a IMSB detonating. Other than the engine serial number m96/0466Y20434, I have no info on what may have also been replaced with the engine replacement. I don’t know if the replacement motor is single row or double row. Car runs well with no ticks, no smoke, and no soot on tailpipes. I’ve been driving it as intended and enjoying every minute of it.
I want a driver, not a garage queen. I’m inclined to proactively do one of the IMS fixes, but the m96/04 seems to be a bit of an odd duck that there is not an abundance of info about. Any insight or input?

It looks like a normal model year 2000 engine. (The 'replacement' motors have "AT" in the engine code.) As you noted that is a transitional period for IMS bearings. With no symptoms and a decent maintenance history I would be inclined to wait until it was time for a clutch. YMMV of course!

Based on that engine serial number, that M96/04 engine came out of a MY2000 car (i.e. "66Y"). Your original engine would have been an M96.02 "68X".

So what are the stats of cars still running OG bearings vs failure?

Changed mine out at 112k miles and after close to 24 years of operation April last year. Never had a problem but was down there anyway, showed no wear apparently (but garage was evasive about single or dual row so lost my trust). 996 millennium first registered Nov '99, 2000 MY, M9604-66Y engine. On the registry only one of the 911 millenniums has been reported to have failed FWIW.

1998 dual row , OK it's a Boxster but dame bearing, failed at 180k kilometers. Lots of metal flakes in oil filter, bearing all stll in one piece but very rough. Replaced with Pelican single row kit and run for 10k kilometers and about 5 oil changes. Then removed the little single row and put in an FVD Brombachet steel dual row. The single row oozed oil when it came out.
Engine runs grate, no metal flakes in oil.

2001 996 C2, 82K miles, bought slightly used in Sept. 2001. Original bearing and almost everything else. Runs great, suspension is toast. Will have an engine-out service sometime soon and replace the IMS bearing along with all the usual stuff. Hoping for another 23 years of fun!

1999 996.1 , 6spd with original dual row bearing at 112135 miles.
Rms had been changed by me at about 30k miles, the car did not burn oil at all. Base model coupe with almost no options other than auto dimming mirrors and sunroof
