05 C4S 996 29k miles, bought it 7 months ago. IMSB was replaced at 18k miles by the previous owner. I know low mile examples are not what this thread was really for...According to some other posts I didn't buy the right 996 because it has low miles and could have issues... Time will tell!

Btw I like this thread even though the IMSB discussions have been beaten to death ultimately lining the pockets of the aftermarket sellers... That being said if my car came with the stock IMSB I would have also purchased a retrofit or solution.... Peace of mind is nice. If someone can enjoy the car without worrying about all these things I envy you!

Default 04 C4s Original IMS at 122,000.

No IMS failure on original IMS. Checking oil every oil change with a Blackstone Lab analysis. Will change IMS when clutch is replaced.

What was the IMSB replaced with and what year was it done?

Default 2002 996 3.6

My car had 127000 miles when I bought it in 2014, so I removed the ims bearing to change with a standard like for like replacement, (which i bought from Bristol bearings for about £8.50!), but with the seals removed. The bearing removed showed no signs of play, but was slightly rough sounding when rotated. I sold the car last March 2019 and the car now has around 135000 with no issues.

Default 1999 996 on original IMS bearing, 52k miles

Just became aware of IMS issues after 20 years and 32k miles of ignorant bliss. Had my indy mechanic take a look and listen and test drive recently, and his net recommendation after an hour with the car was "drive it, enjoy it, don't bother with IMS proactive replacement". Still pondering that advice, but in the meantime, frequent oil changes, blackstone UOA each time, audio recordings, cam variation tracking, oil consumption tracking, etc. are all part of my no-longer-blissfully-ignorant engine vigilance program. And happy to report I am now using more right foot driving higher RPMs as a result of many "drive it like it was stolen" recommendations on this forum.

Just hit 94k before my DE weekend, not a hesitation or hint of an IMS/RMS issue... Oh well, I guess maybe next year!

Think about your post and what you're hearing (or reading) from whom... That should kind of tell you something IMO. In Houston we have some of the best Porsche techs in the country and their advice on this issue (of the numerous I've asked and used), especially at my mileage with no issues arising, was a consensus that most of us arrived at a long time ago. Your preventative maintenance is even above what I do, which I think mine is still pretty solid, so go back to driving in bliss and just have fun with it. My car started responding and IMO needed less maintenance the harder I drove it. On my HPDE weekends I let it click to about 6000-6500 before upshifts and it handles like a champ all weekend. Even around town I'm at 3k as soon as possible to get some power. It's not a $580k Aventador 'lying in wait' to explode on you on the way to Dunkin Donuts like many here would have you believe, unfortunately... Just enjoy it!

I had my IMSB done at 106k mi. original owner had it done under warranty in 2004 with 14k mi. Bearing was getting noisey after we got it out.

I think you might be missing the point of the poll.

Well, it is on my coolant pipes! And I didn't go around bragging about how they hadn't popped before they did.

The IMS/RMS Monster is a sleeping beast. It could literally happen at any and every second to 100% of every 996 ever made. Ever. I just want viewers at home to know I made it another few miles without harm. Hide your friends, hide your wife. IMS Monster all up on erry'body here.
