Car reached 88000 miles still original IMS and clutch but alternator failed and had it rebuilt for $120 and installed it including a new serpentine belt. Took me 2 hours because one of the bolts was rusted so little wd40 and some pouding I fished out the alternator. Dealer wanted $1200 for a new unit and Pelican parts has rebuilt for $600. Auto zone rebuilt $150 so I had my original done at the alternator shop.

I guess as engine failures go that has got to be one of the least painful stories I've read!

Sorry you lost your first pick, congrats on the replacement.

Good to hear the dealer took the car back! I'm amazed you still got another 996. That situation might have scarred me off...or at least made me buy a car that already had the IMS addressed.

I did homework on 2nd one! Called dealer from Carfax report and they gave me history of 1 repair that included IMS and IMSB and a boatload of other stuff under warranty.

What on the CarFax tipped you off to call the dealership?
Did the report mention anything about the IMS/IMSB and other warranty work?

the Carfax report listed a lot of general fairly major work, so I called for specifics. I gave s# and general date of work and they gave me a lot of info w part descriptions and they were very nice. Dealer in Charleston, SC.

2000 - C2 - 94000 miles - No issues whatsoever.

Now the caveat - I purchased the car in CA from a dealer friend who had been driving it and picked it up at an auction (The car was originally from NY). This was in 2014 b/c I did not want to take either of my cars to Italy with me. I run Castrol synth 5-40. Most driving is a high(er) speed between here, Germany and Croatia. So, what this means is I do not know if there has been any prior problems with the car. The only original info on the car was via CARFAX which I take with a grain of salt. No record of clutch replacement/RMS either. GREAT mechanic here and not expensive.

No issues, replaced RMS, clutch and IMSB with dual row pro 2.2 at 73k (kms) as preventative.

Old IMSB was in perfect condition now at 81k (kms). Fingers crossed no engine issues to come.

Always serviced at the dealership annually with M1 0-w50.

Hi all, Interesting read. I have a 2001 996 112k miles, IMS catastrophic failure. Bought a 1999 60K mile core motor with Variotiming tensioner failure and dual row IMS in the process of failure.

I was told my original motor had a IMS failure but instead spun a rod due to Connecting rod bolt coming loose. IMS was perfect.

Default IMS Problems?

Purchased my 2000 Cab last December. Seller was up front about "slight oil leak", PPI stated either RMS or IMS leak. Drove car 2000 miles then replaced IMS-it was fine -no problem and RMS-which was the source of my leak-as expected.
While back there-replaced clutch kit, found water pump showing singns of leaking-replaced and Oil Cooler also showing signs of leaks-replaced as well as well as all fluids and belts-including trans oil.
Been enjoying for a full year and looking forward to many more!

I have a 1998 996 with the standard? 3.4 300hp engine,
No failures of anything yet except the manual seat button doesn't work on one of the seats not that I use it but its noted, she has done 114000 kays so its still quite low as a matter of course the IMS was upgraded by a PO so I guess she will be fine.
