Default 1999 996: Engine shut down on freeway

Yesterday, heading home for lunch, cruising along in the 911 lane (the fast one), when revs, oil pressure drop to zero. I coasted to the right shoulder, checked for traffic, and jumped out to push it as close to the k-rail as I dared before walking a safe distance from my poor C4 and calling AAA to flatbed the poor girl to Black Forest.

******************
And the winner is...

Three votes for the winning fault: fuel pump crapped out. It's good to know I'm not the only one thinking that JC and the Mayans are after me... thanks for validating my paranoia.

too little info to diagnose

if no noise and just shut off I suspect fuel or electrical - not mechanical

Hey, you had as much info as I did when I was busily crapping myself AND trying to get to the side of the road.

Oil pressure will drop to zero when the engine shuts off. So that's not a big help.

Not really a lot to go on but without any nasty noises or other symptoms electrical makes the most sense.

yep probably the ignition switch we hope. What were the key socket syptoms? Did it have slack before engaging the internals? Have you thought maybe you saw something light on the dash and look to see nothing? That's the gremlins playing around there. Anyway I'd really be prone to think ignition switch if the dash lights weren't lit when it shutdown and the key seemed to be easy to turn. I got into my car one night and turned the key to start but when the starter engaged the darn key kept going and everything shut down with no results from anything and played heck getting a good position to remove the key. Although to the day in history your engine died at the same time american bombers bombed the location where porsches are made

Next time, instead of walking, stay in the car and call for help. Much safer to be in a metal cage than to be walking on the shoulder of a highway.

According to the poll, you got bigger problems. If JC and the Mayans dont like you, your pretty much screwed on this deal.

Only 4 things can cause this. No fuel, no spark, no compression, and the JC/Mayan thing.

Shouldn't be to hard to figure out
