Default Caliper painting/coating question

I started to refinish my calipers over the last week, stripped them off the car, cleaned them and first brush painted them which was a complete ball ache, purchased some spray and applied a few coats. They were looking great but I notices a few fisheyes in the paint, so I sanded them down around the fish eyes and wiped them all down with denatured alcohol, went to apply another coat this morning and all the paint has crazed, they look awful.

So I have decided I am going to bite the bullet and have them properly blasted bare and powder coated, there is a local firm that has a lot of experience in doing this.

My question to anyone that has powder coated calipers is how did you do the Porsche lettering?, decals then VHT clear coat over the powder?

Thanks
Ross

I've heard reports that applying the clear coat over decals will cause them to bubble and/or wrinkle. It might be best to apply the decals after the clear coat dries.

Refinished mine this past fall. Used VHT (several coats) put the decals from Suncoast on and all is good. No clear coat used.

Default Another Option

I saw another R Lister who resprayed their calipers with clear. On my 993, the Turbo calipers are in reasonably good condition. So I cleaned then with 3M Adhesive Remover and a toothbrush. I wet sanded with 2000 grit, dried with a heat gun, taped up the wheel well, covered the car and then sprayed with 500 degree clear caliper paint. While not perfect and not as good as a good powder coat, they turned out well. And I did not even remove the calipers!

Nice work Bella,

They look excellent. Don't think mine are in good enough condition, but might try anyway before repainting.

Thanks for the post.

I painted my calipers with a brush on kit (from Duplicolor). Came out great. I used caliper decals I got on ebay, and clearcoated over the decals with a high-temp engine spray paint clear from the auto parts store.

No bubbling, but after a DE event, the front decals have yellowed a bit from the heat. No change to the rear decals. I'm not sure if it's the decal or the clear coat that has yellowed, but I don't think I'd use the clearcoat again. Even if the decal has yellowed, It would be easier to replace the decal if there were no clearcoat.

The clearcoat yellowed from the heat. Front calipers always get the most abuse.

I did mine for the 944 using Por-15 Caliper Paint and decals from eBay. Happy with the result and its lasting well. I did get a fisheye on one caliper (pic) but just left it and I didn't clear over the decal. Over 3yrs and still look good.

Spray painted mine with silver VHT, ebay decals and VHT clear. The hard work is in the preparation.
