Hello Meares - I personally don't believe that your manhood has been damaged by choosing a dealer to look after your car. A good relationship with a good dealer can really pay off if you ever need them in your corner.
I have been one of those guys who has allowed the dealer to do everything on my cars (except they are NOT allowed to EVER wash them
. When a 4th gear sychro went on my C2, Porsche tried to hold their ground and would only approve a rebuild by the dealer. The car was under CPO and I politely yet persistently stated that I wanted a Porsche factory rebuilt transmission installed.
It took the dealer about 5 days to get approval, but I did get what I wanted.
The dealer just replaced my clutch and AOS, along with the LN IMSB "while we were in there". The OE bearing appeared to be just fine with 75K miles on it.
Plus - I like the fact that I have all service records for my car and that all the work has been done to Porshce specs. I've seen some pretty Krazy DIY stuff on Porsches, best was a rotor missing a screw because the original snapped upon removal, I'm sure Porsche made sure that extra hardware was engineered in and that these cars don't really need everything installed the way Porsche built the cars. And oh yeah - the zip tie holding a brake line to a strut was a most ingeneous DIY repair.
However, not to sound too confusing, I actually have training and experience in automotive theory and mechanics and do work on my other cars. So............ bought myself the Bentley manual and might just give replacing my front brake rotors and pads a DIY try.
Whether I try it or not, succeed or fail, I believe my manhood will remain intact.
Happy motoring - for me, and I am not saying this is how it should be for every other Porsche owner, it is driving these cars that is what it is all about. Actually had some fun driving home in the snow in the C2 today, main roads were nuts, a good bit of ice and goofy SUV tanks on and off the road. Once I hit the country twisties near my home though, it was actually fun.

not so fast! i've changed 2 of the HVAC servos, replaced the little belt between the 2 distributor caps and installed a rear muffler bypass pipe from fabspeed; on my dad's 92 C2 cab .... put a cab cable and gear drive on both sides, adjusted the top and installed the "G" pipe bypass on the other C2 cab...
by NO means am i even a half-*** DIYer...i just read the directions.....and got lucky....but, that's as far as i want to go on DIY thing....i just don't have the time or drive right now, so i'm going to the dealer....btw, this is my first time with a H20 cooled porsche

I do absolutely everything on my cars myself. I don't necessarily enjoy it as much as some people, but I do it because I have a fully equipped shop. Also I can do it in a timely fashion, and know exactly what happens to my car. If I didn't have a shop, chances are it would be a dealership car

Getting back to the OP...I did an LN bearing upgrade the shortly after buying my car...did the AOS, clutch and added LSD to the tranny while I was in there. Keeping the old bearing was not an option I would even consider. However, when they took it out it was fine. :-)

Judging by the service manager's tone, it was almost like we both knew that dealerships just don't do big repairs on out of warranty cars.
and as far as the IMS issue, I personally believe dealerships have been a contributor in this problem. They've recommended an oil that engine experts refuse to use, encouraged intervals that were too long according to same experts, never adivsed their customers of issues/options when high mileage cars came in for clutch jobs nor did they advise their customers that having the car sit for long intervals could be an issue because of the inherernt IMS flawes.

just did A LOT of talking to Leith Porsche in Cary...they explained the differences, took time with me and i'm going with the LN...they have it, the clutch and all the other ancillary items that i need in stock...they also explained that, if i wished to get the porsche bearing; i'd have to buy the whole intermediate shaft....give them a day's notice, drop off my car and they'll have a loaner for me! I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!! THEY HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND MY GREATEST EXPECTATIONS! i took my car in for an air filter last saturday and they treated me like i've bought a turbo S cab from them for the past 10 yrs!! i won't go ANYWHERE else!

In order to remain a "Porsche authorized dealer" you have to follow established guidelines.

Instructing the dealer service departments to take on different practices and warn their customers midstream would have been an addmission of a potentially catastrophic flawe. They simply left it to the consumer to educate themselves of what most casual owners would qualify as an unknown unknown.
