Default My horn only works when my car is off

Okay, I have two issues with my car. I will make separate topics on them as they're so different. Here's problem number 1.

Since I got my car, my horn has not worked. Yesterday, when getting out of the car, I hit the horn accidentally in the garage and the horn beeped so immediately and fervently that I just about jumped through the sunroof in shock.

I turned the car on and sure enough it doesn't work. With the car off, it works great.

Has anyone else had this issue? What's the problem? Obviously I don't have bad horns.

I don't have a direct answer for you but maybe a clue.?
I recently had my steering wheel off to replace the combination switch.
When I remounted it I reversed the brown & brown/green? striped wire for the horn. One goes to the shaft ground and one goes to the horn frame on the steering wheel. That one must activate the relay.

This is the curious part.
The key was in the ign switch while I was bolting things together. I finished the install and reconnected the battery. All worked as it should until I removed the key from the ign switch.
When I did the horn started to blow continuously, it would stop when I put the key back in the ign switch??? I realized what I had done and after I reversed the horn wires all was well again.

Maybe your horn relay is bad?

I think that you're onto something. I think it's also possible my ground wire is broken. I seem to remember the horn worked intermittently when I got it a couple of months ago.

Simple ... if another driver pisses you off, turn off the engine, honk, power back up and you're on your way.

It does sound like the electicity is "running backwards" (using the hot bus as a ground) -- so checking grounds makes sense.

I had the same issue with my 996. The first thing replaced was the igntion switch - no joy. Then the "clock spring" that passes signal to the horn was replaced. That fixed the problem - $500 later.

As long as you don't lose your middle finger in a band saw accident, you don't really need a horn.
