The passenger side cover on mine broke and I did the same thing. Bought the non-lighted mirror assembly ($20, and no warning sticker) and just used the cover as a replacement part.

I have the new non-lighted one but am struggling to get the cover off the new one so I can put it on the old one. Can't seem to get it to flex enough to come off the tabs at either end.

Any tips/secrets? Would hate to break this one before I get to use it.

This isn't all that easy. At one point, I was about ready to just cut the frame (which I didn't need) just to get the cover out. Removing the mirror from the frame allowed me to flex the frame around enough to get the divots in the cover to clear the pins. You don't need to remove the clips. I saved mine in case those break soon.

To install the cover into the frame, some take the visor off the car. I did not. Note that there is a small plastic tab at the hinge side of the cover which has to go between the copper contact tab (this turns on the lights) and the frame. I hadn't noticed this, so I spent some time trying to slip the copper contact tab to the correct position.

Seriously, that's all I did, twice on the 996 and once on the Mini. It is a lot easier with the visor off the car, for sure. Maybe just heat it up a little with a hairdryer if it is too cold. Plastic is very temperature dependant.

I ask my Porsche parts person about this Non lighted replacement lid - and they thought the idea would work but you would not have the switched on/off lamp --- ??? Not that big a deal since it will not work now - just asking?

The cover is the same, switched or unswitched, you leave your lighted visor in place. Mine is an '02, I never checked to see if other years are different?

I have to do this. Girl broke my passenger visor lid by flipping it up vast and slamming the cover. 140k miles and finally, the car succumbs to usage by a girl. Sheesh.

So looks like there is more than one part number can anyone elaborate?
One says matte black and other says gloss black but the pictures look the same?

996.731.903.01.01C (Matte)
996.731.531.01.01C (no idea what this is?)
999-631-147.90

or

996.731.903.00.01C (Gloss and says is compleate assembly)

The part number on my receipt is:

986-731-901-00-01C.

Yes, that's a Boxster part number, but it's matte black and matches exactly and has no warning sticker as a bonus.

Default 996 Visor cover repair

My 2000 996 had both covers broken off, but the lights still worked on the visors, so I bought the unlighted mirrors from Suncoast, removed the lids and installed them on the car and they fit perfect and work as new. Plus they don't have the big airbag warning labels, either. Very nice solution!
