Default Bentley manual

Just picked up my Bentley 996 manual yesterday and it's great - all 8 lbs of it! A must have for everything from small stuff right up to serious engine work . For Vancouver folks, Wilkinson's Automobilia carries it and gives a Rennlist discount.

It would have been great if the manual had an electronic, searchable version included with it.

Bill, thanks for the info. Where is Wilkinsons located? How much did it cost you?

rasank, they are at 2531 Ontario St. at Broadway. It's $229 less 10%. It's a few bucks, but worth it when we are paying $135/hr at shops these days.

babylonboots - I have a CD set as well but it was made for the 3.4 while the 3.6 was just an addendum making it hard to follow. They also jumble up the Carrera with the GT3 so with the searches you get everything for both models. In the Bentley manual each chapter has a whole section on each separate engine making it easier to follow. And I don't know about you but I've tried using my iPad in the garage and I much prefer to have a good old paper book to write notes in and get all greasy.

Thanks Bill, I'll go and pick one up. Though I only do oil changes and small stuff, I have been looking for a "Haynes" manual for the 996.

Not sure if this is the same manual but here's a link to Amazon selling something that looks similar for $138 USD.

Billy, did the CD come with your manual? I got mine off of Amazon and the CD wasn't included.

That's great. Glad I saw your thread and was able to respond before you hit the bookstore.

This is the same one! I got mine a week or 2 ago with FREE 2 Day Shipping, if you're a member of Amazon's Prime shipping. I know a couple of the guys got a $20 discount for signing up early over at Pelican with one of the Bentley
Salesman at the orginal price of $229 (& thought they were getting a deal) & when they saw this on Amazon they weren't too happy to say the least. It is a Great Book by the way. I also have the so-called must have 996 essential companion & to ME there's NO Comparison between the two, service manual is 100 times better (but being a service manual I guess you really can't compare the two) I just wasn't very impressed with the essential companion to start with! jmo

No, I've had the CD set for a few months. The book doesn't come with one, but they do have some online videos, including how to change the IMS bearing which is pretty cool.

How does the Bentley manual compare to the factory service manual?

It is SUPPOSED to have everything that is on the FSM, but I've not compared the two. Since the online one I've seen that is free doesn't cover the MKII engines, I'm hoping that this will be a better source. The 2 Bentley videos on the WIKI I watched were useless, so I hope the book is better. Anytime a video does something like " for clarity sake, we show the water pump removal with the engine removed" is beyond useless. The WHOLE part of a video would be to show what has to be done to work around the obstacles while the engine is still installed. Who has the experience to remove an engine, but needs a video to show them to remove a water pump? Seriously, Bentley, what were you thinking?. BTW, mine won't get here until the 27th, so I'll know more after that. The reviews, especially Lorens, whom I respect a lot, have been very good.
