Replacing SAI, need help
Coming from a 951, this 2001 996 is pretty new to me and this is my first DIY. My SAI is buzzing like a table saw and I am going to replace it. I assume I need to just remove the air box and then the pump? Any tips on removing the air box and pump and things to watch out for? I am also looking for a good used SAI if anyone has one. Thanks, Randy

Pretty easy once air box is out. I put a Fabspeed air intake on my 2002 C4S and it required relocating the SAI pump. The Fabspeed instructions told me to first disconnect the MAF connector from the inlet. I struggled with this blind connector for a long time, could not see the locking tab to release it, even with a mirror. Finally I skipped this step and removed the rest of the fasteners holding the air box in, and was able to lift the box out far enough to get a good look at the MAF plug to disconnect it. The SAI pump is a snap after that!

Is the MAF connected to the air box? Does it just unplug?

dig in... really super simple. if you ever built a peice of cheap furnature from wal-mart,, You got this
I will tell you airbox comes out in one peice. No need to open it to remove it

Cool thanks guys. Now all I need is another SAI pump. If someone on here does not have one looks like there are some on ebay.

Ted, SAI is Secondary Air Injection system. It is an air pump that pumps fresh air into the cat converters at various times (mainly on startup) to help with emissions.
The MAF sensor cable plugs in just upstream of the big round inlet tube going into the throttle body, it is the only thing with a wire going to the air box, right on top. It has a clip to release before you can unplug it. That's why I lifted the air box part-way out in order to see the clip and avoid breaking it. It's pretty easy when you move it so you can see it.

These are sometimes able to be rebuilt if you drill out the rivets, clean up the internals if they aren't too bad off and repack or replace the bearings.

This is not something that I know too much about (regarding Porsche secondary air injection pumps), but for many cars the cost is much less than $1,600. Is it possible that the $1,600 price quoted is way off?
