IMS Repair / Prevention not Possible on 2005+ 3.8?
Is it correct that you cannot prevent or repair the pending IMS problem on a 2005+ 3.8L engine? A person would have to actually split the case to repair the bearing, correct?
There are no warning signs of the IMS failure, so I would have to remove engine and split case just to know if it was going to fail? This seems really absurd. Even if I replace the clutch I cant repair the IMS issue without total disassembly? Please correct me if I am wrong.
I assume the 2005 does qualify for the Porsche extended warranty at @$3500.
To summarize, there is really no advantage to purchasing a 2005 3.8 over a 1999 3.4 to 2004 3.6, given all have the same mileage and proper care, right?
Have I been mislead to think that the 2005+ engines were better designed?

all you can do is remover the seal ring on the bearing - they are better - just not impervious to IMS issues but much less likely
buy a warranty - go drive, smile - forget you have an IMS

Porsche changed to a larger single bearing in 2005+. This includes the 3.6 L too and is supposed to be stronger.
My 996 has a reman engine installed in 2006 so I think mine is not accessible unless you split the case. To mitigate the issue, I installed the Guardian which should warn me if there is a major problem and save the engine.

Dream c, I am very serious. I talked to this delearship today and they seem to think the price is fair. When you use their "Black Book" program on their website, their Porsche only comes up to $32,000 value trade in. So I dont know. My understanding was that the IMS issue was solved in the 2005+, especially in the S models with the 3.8L.
I did some research on this engine and found IMS issues as well. Isnt this covered by an extended warranty anyway? If so I guess its no major stress but I was told the issue was resolved with the 2005 and once again the dealer doesnt know much about their own products.
