Default Battery issues

I have read alot of post before posting.

Just bought a 996tt, a week ago, it started having a weak start, then would not start. Lights come I hear the pump then just click, click, click. Best guess battery. It responded to a jump so took it over to Franz Balm, they tested alternator which was fine and put in a new interstate battery.

Next day same problem as above, so as I Was Taking it in, the car just died in the middle of the intersection.

Bad new battery or bad alternator? Hope it is not the alternator! That is expensive.

If its an interstate battery it could have been sitting for a really long time. Have them recharge battery and test it.

My guess would be the alternator. If it was the battery, it wouldn't have died at an intersection unless not properly charged. Keep us posted on what they come up with,

All the following assumes that the replacement battery they fitted is good!!

Many years ago I had the exact same problem with a Ford van. Tried all sorts of things.......cut a long story short.....it turned out to be a bad battery cable connection. They always cleaned the battery terminals but not the inside of the battery leads. When we did that, problem gone. If it's not that then my next place to look would be the battery ground location.

BTW, alternators don't provide the energy for the car, the battery does. The alternator just keeps the battery topped up so if it was a bad alternator you should have been able to run for some time as the battery ran down, and then the battery would have tested as pretty much totally discharged.

Also, you might want to check the fuse panel and see what circuit has a draw, when the keys are out of the ignition.

yeh it should be reading somewhere around 14 or slightly below. Certainly not 8 or 9. I managed to get a rebuilt alternator for a Deville I had last year for half the price of a new one so you might want to look in that direction before splashing out on a new one. However make sure it is the exact same alermator as you have to hand your old one in to the firm.

Just picked my car this morning, down around $900, but at least I can spool those turbos. Issue resolved with the new alternator. Thanks for all the help. Now I will search why why "oil pressure failure" keeps coming on. It this this on my previous 02 996c2, as well.
