Have any of you driven with the headers open - no muffler?
Guys, on my '84 911, I've installed a set of used headers I got from a friend, and installed the Flowmaster muffler setup that he had. the two systems don't quite mate up though, so I need to head to my local muffler shop to have the guy get everything lined up. That leaves me with the task of possibly driving with OPEN headers to his shop about three miles away.
I started it up and it's OBNOXIOUS! Like Drag Racer obnoxious.
Have you guys done this?

I did this with a small block v8 chevy truck back when I was in high school. It was hilariously fun. A bunch of guys were asking me what kind of mufflers I had on it the next day If you have neighbors they will not like you.

More than once in my youth. I remember driving my big-block Z28 w/ 454 bored .060 at 11:1 compression on headers and 4" collector across town. Let’s just say it made pretty colors out the exhaust at dusk but attracted all the wrong kinds of attention from local LEO. Although it might have been the high-rise manifold with the 1000cfm holly and no hood that might have caught their eye, LOL.

I did it in my 1984 Pontiac Firebird. It was a 305 V8. I had an Edelbrock manifold on it, a Holly 650 double-pumper four-barrel carb and a Crane cam. I put a new set of Hooker headers on it and I drove it to the muffler shop with open headers to have my exhaust installed. I went with Cherry Bomb mufflers and pipes that stuck out right under the doors Daytona-style. I thought it was pretty cool back in the '80s, but as I recall, it was so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation in the car.

Lol! All of you guys are giving me a good laugh.
I have to fly for the next four days, so I'll probably drive it down there on Monday morning. Oh man...

When I was installing my PSE I started mine up with only the headers just for laughs. Obnoxiously loud. Heck I run with the PSE is quiet mode 50% of the time as it get pretty loud when you get on it. I know that when I have seen post of people running with muffler delete pipes I have said that I thought this was not really a good approach to respecting others.
As a kid I ran my Harley with straight pipes, but that was 40 years ago. Now i have a Road King with the quietest pipes I could find. You can hardly hear the exhaust. We do a lot of touring and 6-8 hours with a loud exhaust can really wear on you. The same is true in my cab with the loud setting on the PSE.

I have exhaust bypass pipes on my 996, had them for over a year. I love them. No problems with the neighbors and I work rotating shifts. If you know how to drive with the throttle, no issues in a residential area. Just my 2 cents. When you get on it....that is a different story though. I drive by cops all the time and just watch the gas pedal. Not that big of an issue.
