Keys do have batteries that need to be replaced every couple of years. You'll need your dealer to order the key blank, cut it and program your car to accept the key. I haven't yet had to purchase one, so I can't tell you exactly what you'll pay, but it will be in the $300+ range.
Try replacing the battery first. If that doesn't work it may be the circuit board.
The blade part will still be good
If you just want an "extra" key get a valet key(no remote function) cheaper!
Mine cost $300. When the batttery failed on my second key recently, the Porsche dealer replaced it for me for free. Not really, I recently had spent around $6500 there so they did not charge me an extra dime. I suppose they figured I had recently paid for it.
Sorry, I should have specified. They replaced the battery for no charge. But I just found that the new battery is dead in less than 1 week since they replaced it.
Now I am woried that the key electronics may have a problem. Or they put in an old battery, maybe why it cost me nothin?
Buying a new key and getting it to work is a three part process. The cheapest way I found to get a replacement key was to:
1. Buy the keyhead on ebay ($129) make sure its new and comes with code tag.
2. Bought key blanks (2) and had them cut by a guy in England (Ebay) He cuts it from a picture of your original key, worked great! ($35.00).
3. Get it programmed from dealer, was $75 here in Alabama. This cost varies according to which stealer you work with. Total cost $239.
