Default 2003

I have a 2003 C2 Coupe. 16,xxx miles, original engine, only have had to replace the driver window motor and a few rubber bits. The car saw very little driving until I was allowed to take it.

It doesn't look all that good to me as far as long term durability. Tell me I'm wrong. Is the MK1 MY 2000 and before?

^^ i dont think this data suggests that. MK1 is 1999 to 2001.

How's that?

Most of these cars were purchased by their original owners to be used as weekend, good weather fun cars, and as such, they were not driven much in their first five years or so. Most of us are second, third, fourth owners who drive these cars more regularly, so the cars are finally beginning to build mileage. These cars are anywhere from eleven to fourteen years old now and most still have their original engines and run as if they were new. Yes, they've had parts replaced over the years, but most of those parts are considered age or wear limited anyway - items such as the alternators, coil packs, air/oil separators, clutches. The IMS bearings and Rear Main Seals are known weak areas, so most - if not all - of us replace those two items with upgraded versions as the clutch comes out for normal replacement.

My 137,000 mile car with its original engine still pulls like a freight train, starts immediately, passes smog every year with flying colors, gets great mileage, and feels as smooth as a turbine.

In my opinion, these cars are generally quite robust.

The Mk 1 cars are 1999 - 2001. The 2002 cars got new headlights, new front bumper, a 3.6L engine and a glove box.

In the States, that is. In Europe, the Mk 1 cars were introduced as MY '98, so the first ones came out in late '97.

My 99 C2 has 72,000 miles. Original engine. Replaced clutch and did IMS bearing upgrade at 70,000 miles. Original double row IMS bearing was failing. I was very lucky to have replaced it when I replaced the clutch. If you have not done it then you're driving on borrowed time! My mechanic, Karl Troy, at European Road & Racing in North Charleston kept my bearing to show to his other 996 & 997 owners. My clutch, AOS replacement, IMS upgrade and oil change ran about $3500.00 all together. I just had to replace my water pump this week.

Default 58k on 2002

Original engine .. po did clutch and rms at 30k. Coolant tank done under warranty. Radio failed and window regulator; oil pressure sender... that's about it ....not bad for 10 years ....tell me about a performance car that is better than this? How many engine failures versus original on mk2's up to 100k ?

Interesting dip at 85,000 - 100,000. Just a theory, but this period is normally when the clutch goes. Owners that took advantage of this service and had the IMS / RMS / AOS done at the same time make it to 100,000 ++. !
