how much does it worth ? 1999 60k miles hail damage
I wonder how much do you think is worth a 1999 996 C2 with HEAVY hail damage ?
I was contacted by the owner who is trying to squeeze a little bit more money out of his totaled 996, and I am trying to see how it would fit if I decided to convert it to a race car.
I am talking about 1000 golf ball sized hail coming on the car
- all windows broken
- windshield broken
- headlight and taillight broken out of their sockets!
- every single body panel look like a golf ball including pilars
the car is running fine and I am planning on converting it to a full race car.
I'd assume a car in good condition would be worth what $20k ?
So I'd say 10k for a car like this, no ?
Updated: it seems the best way might be to have the insurance buy it and then the owner can try to buy it back for little to nothing and then sell it to me as a bonus
This car might be tough to save though..

$20K less 25% less cost of repairs.
Sometimes the value will be a negative number. In that case the value of the salvaged components less the cost of removal and selling.
Or, whatever you think it's worth

problem is that I am afraid the insurance will actually offer the owner more than what it worth to me :S
I am waiting to see the insurance 'offer', I wish I could buy it for whatever the insurance will sell the car for but then it might be hard to track down when the insurance will sell it
Does anyone has any idea if it is possible to talk to the insurance adjuster and make them an offer I assume they prefer to sell in bulk to salvage company, but I'd hope I could save that one

Wow. Just wow... :0(
I don't think you want to spend what it would take to repair that enough to make it a race car. Cheaper to buy someone else's '99 996 that has a blown or very high mileage motor, and swap out your motor/transmission, keep the Turbo-twists and tires, keep the spare tire and tools in the trunk. Send the rest off to the recycler. Or maybe put the take offs from the donor car onto your damaged car and maybe get $5k from a recycler.
Just my personal opinion. I have absolutely no experience at what I am suggesting.

I am thinking with a race car I need to replace all windows with plastic and I don't care about the look of the panel until I replace them with carbon fiber anyways. head and taillight I don't need. If the engine is good...

Wowza!
Most of the time the insurance will give you an option to buy it back, once they total it out. For couple grand it would be worth it, and just CF the whole thing.

The car is toast, you will not be able to repair that car with $10K. That car has an easy $20K in damage to make it right again. Headlights, tail lights, and all windows, that alone is over $5K. Hell it may be more than 20K in damage. I wouldn't touch it.
I've raced SCCA for years and that car will never pass the safety inspection.

The car is worthless to anyone who does not have the time to gut it and part it out. To a racer, all it has of value is the engine and transmission, which you could use as spares, but who knows how long either of them would last. $10k is way too much to pay for it.
