My car rides much nicer with the 19's, I had the factory turbo twists with Hankooks, what a rough ride. Put on the 3 piece HRE's with Michelin 19's and it felt like a new car. Maybe the guys having bad experience with larger rim size are using cheapo knock off Chinese wheels. The smaller the wheels, the older you are. . . lol. It's a generational thing.

Unless you put on worse (softer) tires on the 19s, it's physically impossible to ride better with less rubber...I went from stock 18s on my m3 to forged 3 piece 19s (lighter than stock) and the car rode like crap. Ended up going with forged 17s.

On the side note, the whole "big wheels = i have money" message only really speaks to people from lower classes; certainly not something I'm interested in emulating.

I like the looks of the larger wheels but even with just ROW M030 suspension and 18" wheels my car is already pretty rough riding for my daily commute. So I stick with the stock size.

Your reply is very confusing, the 19's on my car probably are softer than the Hankook 18's. Not sure where you get it's worse to have softer tires. I drove the car with the 18's and now drive the car with the 19's. I can assure you the ride is much better.

You feel someone that installs 19's or 20's on their car is making a statement about social class? That's deep. Do you think maybe they are of the opinion the rims look better than stock?

Edit, I get it now, you're a racist. Why didn't you just come out and say it?

20's = stupid size.

D2 = I hope they are not the same D2 that makes the suspension kits etc...

It may also be the slight body differences of Pcars; 997's IMO look better with 19's. 991's look fine with 20's. As an example, an older 964 or 993 would look somewhat awkward with 19's.

Try to freshen their Pcars up a bit by adding modern bits; wheels are usually the first items. I went from OEM 17's to 19's when i picked up my 00 Cab. Talk about a big jump in looks/improved handling. Stock suspension, street/highway DD. YMMV.

The Sport Technos on my current Turbo are some of the lightest OEM 18's , so they'll stay in my garage if/when the time comes to change wheels.

On the first part, the point I'm making is that that everything else held constant, bigger wheels will run rougher. That is, if you put those same softer tires you have one the 19s on an 18" set, they would ride even better.

On the other point, if you think that "lower social class" means race, you're merely reflecting your own bias. My point was that stupidly oversized wheels is how people with not whole lot of money try to signal wealth to other people with not whole lot of money.

Did I read that right? Wow! You should see the soccer moms driving around with 24s on there Caddys here in Tx. Every year it seems like the wheels on cars get bigger. Eventhough I like the wheels (sort of) I would not put those on. Don't want to trade off any performance or rubbing. Just saw the unveiling of the new boxster S, and the new 991 and they both had 20s.

As far as big wheels go, I remember 10 years ago when 17s where consisdered big wheels.

Had 19"s for a bit and the ride wasn't my cup-o-tea.

IIRC, the new P cars run optional 295/30-20s in the rear, so there is just as much (little more) rubber & air than the optional 285/30-18s on the 996. Putting 20's on a 996 and keeping the overall diameter even close, will always give a rougher ride and poor handling. If you just put larger rubber on, and "make it fit" you really lose torque at the ground, so acceleration suffers. For some it's about the look, others the handling, and others, some kind of compromise. To each his own.
