AM still sucks with aftermarket radio

I like to listen to AM talk radio but the stock radio reception of AM broadcast was terrible with a lot of engine whine. I put in a nice JVC head unit and the AM still sucks, even with the car motor off. I'm thinking the antenna in the windshield is less than ideal for AM reception. Anybody else having problems with this and find a solution? I was thinking of trying one of those flexible antennas you can hide in the dash somewhere.

I have the same issue with my Kenwood aftermarket unit. I actually took it back to the shop where I had it installed because it was so bad. They told me that with the focus on Sirius/XM, iPod integration and Pandora, that nobody listens to AM anymore and the manufacturers don't spent much on their AM tuners. Couple that with a bad antenna, and you can't get much AM radio.
