Default Question about Bilstein Susp

I searched and found plenty of info on the PSS9/10 series and the X73/74 set ups and that is more that what i want to invest in a once in a while trip to the track.

My son and I installed new Zimmerman rotors and the Hawk HPS dustless pads yesterday and noticed the bump stops are severely deteriorated. The ride has become quite mushy on not confidence inspiring at all. I don't plan on doing a ton of track events but from my motorcycle road racing experience, I know suspension is where you put the money first. I use it as a daily driver except on rainy days. I also do not mind a stiff ride so long it doesn't jar my teeth loose when I hit bumps.

I'm only looking to improve the handling a few notches above stock form, not make it ride/handle like a full on Cup car.

My question are:

1) Is there a huge difference in stiffness between the HD series and the Sport Series?

2) If I also update the sway bars at both ends will it help the car handle better than if it were new with the new shocks and bars.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

If you need new shocks then a set of swaybars isn't going to fix your problem. However, swaybars are generally the least expensive way to adjust/improve the handling of a car.

I've never tried the sport series of Bilstein shocks.

If you have a C2 take a look at the Koni FSD shock. The guys on the 993 forum rave about them. Softer at low frequencies and stiffen up at high frequencies. I would have tried them but I have a C4 and they aren't available for C4's. I ended up going with the PSS10's which are great but expensive ( and I got men for $1,850).

Correct, sway bars will not compensate for bad shocks, but I intend on replacing shocks and swaybars at the same time.

Dharn55: I will def check out the Koni shocks. Thanks

Gotcha. I was in the same situation and decided to go with a coilover setup and GT3 bars. I sent you a PM on the swaybar options.

You might also looks at upgrading your motor mounts. I put the X73 mounts on a couple of weeks before replacing the rest of the suspension, and was amazed at the difference that change alone made in the driving dynamics of the car.

Andy,

If you want to lower the car... and some folks say that is the best improvement in handling in a 996... and if you have a C 4... I have TechArt height adjustable Coil-over kit with Eibach springs in my garage I will sell Cheep! Now it needs new Bilstien inserts in front but all the spring & strut hardware is bolt on. PM me if you are interested. I need garage space so any good offer will be considered.

I have thought about that, but I will probably wait to do that until I replace the clutch, IMS, RMS, and AOS.

I'm pretty sure it has been lowered by the PO. Sorry, I have a C2.

I'm sure someone will PM you now that you have made it public

You really don't need to wait. You can replace them in about 20 minutes in your garage. You don't even need to lift the car. You just need a floor jack to support the motor while you make the swap.

the valving is the same, but the sports are shorter for lowering springs

I have an 03 C4S and put in bils sport shocks in and used the stock springs. The roads here are quite bad and I find the car at times a little too stiff. If I had to do it again I'd look at the HDs or konis.

I did sports in my 82 SC i was so impressed it seemed to balance the front to rear feel, the whole car felt so solid the ride was what I expect a 911 to feel like not choppy or stiff. Very controlled nice.....

SSST: Thanks for the mount swap info. I can def do that myself fairly quickly from the sounds of it. Much appreciated.

AspenST: After some research I went with the Koni FDS setup. They are being installed tomorrow. I also bought new bumpstops and used/new fr/rr 996 GT3 swaybars and droplinks from a fellow rennlister.

I am probably set on mods for a while

Thanks for all the help and tips everyone.

I will report back on the Koni's performance after my first trackday.

I'd be interested to see how they ride on a regular day basis outside of trackdays as well.

My friends have them on the BMW but I'm curious if they work as well on a Porsche too. Some that are used to more aggressive street driving felt they were a bit soft but I'd like to hear your opinions in every day driving.
