There.
In last month's Excellence, there was a very nice piece on the 996 C4S as a "smart buy," equal to the turbo for significantly less. That's followed by a Q&A later in the issue where the question, "997 IMS failures," was asked of the tech forum. The following suggestions (among several others relating to oil) were made to reduce the likelihood of an IMS failure:
"With your engine at full operating temperature, drive the the engine rpm up; if possible...accelerate to or near engine redline once or more per driving cycle."
I thought that was interesting and good advice, and it got me thinking (here's where the title comes in): I really don't ever drive my car higher than 4000-4500 rpm, ever. I'm making a mistake. I should clearly be driving it to 4500, 5000, 5500 often and 6000 at least once a ride (if not higher).
So I tried that on my way home on the highway. Wow; what a difference. I'm starting to get the point. Made shifting and driving much, much better.
Assume most of us drive at 4000 or higher quite often? I've seen that many highway DD users drive at a more gas-conscious 2500-3000, which I will continue to do for some/most of the drive, but it looks like I'd better step on pedal a bit more....

Studies have shown increasing oil pressure reduces blood pressure!

I have never been afraid to redline my car. If you are only taking it to 4500 you are missing out on most of the fun of this engine along with whatever benefits that brings to said bearing. ENJOY!!!!

Peter Peter Peter... Please don't be so cautious with your pcar. The redline is set at 7000. Go and enjoy it bud. Take it to a DE If you can. Theses cars only wake up at 4500...

Just further conformation on how to drive a 996. Drive it like it was meant to be driven. After all it is a street legal racing car. I bought my 996 as a DD or should I say a Daily Racer. I also bought a radar detector, something I find I might need down the road. I find it very hard to keep to a speed limit in a street legal racing car. I like to keep my revs above 2500 where I can see my oil pressure about 3 or even 4 when the engine is at max working temps. I darn't mention petrol consumption. Lets put it this way, the local Petrol Station have gotten to know me so well, they invited me to their Christmas Party last December. LOL
