inoperable horn
So I got my "new" 99 996 a few weeks ago, and on the PPI it was noted that the horn did not work. I've read other threads and it seems pretty common, and pretty easy to repair. I'm wondering, however, if replacing the horns should be my starting point. That is, are there other trouble shooting steps I should take before ordering and ripping off the front bumper to replace.?
As a side note, I haven't quite figured out the alarm system. I need to read further. But sometimes when I lock the car, I just hear the locks engage and the lights flash (twice, I think). Other times the car beeps once after the locks engage. I know when I've left a window open, it beeps twice meaning the car is not secure. Anyway, is that the same horn that is used as the "regular" driving alert horn? Am I hearing it intermittently because the horn is not working all the time? Or is this a separate horn/separate issue?
Thanks!

Check your fuse, someone might have removed it because the rubber grommets in the airbag/horn frame deteriorated (the real reason why the horn doesn't work).
If you can hear the horn when locking an unsecured car, then both of your horns are not bad and the problem is with the frame or fuse.
Hearing a warning beep while locking the car means the car is not secure. Common reasons for this are hood/trunk latch microswitch, center console tray switch, radio ground, fuel door flap, passenger compartment monitor. Or as you pointed out you left a window down, latch, or door open.
Also, post some pics of the car! Or did I miss em?

Thanks, I'll check the fuse today. Horn definitely doesn't work from steering wheel.
Yes, I posted some pics a couple of weeks ago. I'll post more after a couple of projects, including clay and wax.

OK, no fuse map on my fuse panel plate, so does anyone have a link to a sure map. Found one for a Boxster, it may be the same, but the map was unreadable any way.
Thanks for any help!

Like Logray says. Lucky the horn isn't stuck on
Mine is a more than standard push to get it to honk and its picky on where you push. Like he says its commonly the steering wheel mech thats failed. Our Porsche service manager's car had his fail from parking it where the sun could back the steering wheel when taking it to work. Shouldn't be a hard fix.
Before going in find out if you need a security code for the radio when hooking the battery back up. You have to disconnect the battery to be safe operating around the aribag in the steering wheel.
Watch out for flying 911's out of Dallas.

OK, tons of threads about radio codes. I've got what I thought was a pretty complete set of original manuals and records. I can't find the code there, but I did find the fuse assignments pamphlet thingy!
