Oil change fee
If you don't change your own oil, what do you pay to have it changed? Anyone chip in. Someone's asked me, and I thought what I was quotes wasn't absurd, but I'm getting disagreement on what "absurd" is.

I've read about the $400 dealer oil change.
Most indy's will either charge you retail for the oil and cheap labor <or> cheap oil and more labor, but still probably in the $100-150 range for labor, plus whatever they charge for the oil.
The answer... no more than an hours worth of your time, some very basic tools and...
You can usually buy Mobil or Castrol on discount for about $5-6 per quart. Add another $10-$15 for a filter. Easy change!

Thanks. Local dealers charge about $300 or more here, so that would seem almost in line.
Agree that doing self is easy enough with right tools and time. I also agree that the record of doing it "officially" may be worth it for me, plus annual check-up by qualified mechanic (not me) is worth the money to me.

About $277 Oil, filter, labour, environmental fees, taxes etc... I guess I am doing my own from now on. The cost of the oil and filter represent 65% of the cost.

Around $150 from my Indy. But that also puts an experienced mechanic under my car and poking around the engine a couple of times a year. That is valuable in terms of keeping ahead of other problems... Before they leave you by the side of the road or cost you big money.

My local indy charges me $180 and uses Titan synthetic oil (5w-40). I usually take it in every 5-6k miles, which works out to 9-10 month intervals. Although I am quite capable of doing it myself, I like the fact that a trained professional is poking around the underside of my car on a routine basis.

Anyway, my dealer asked $240 to change the oil on my 996. After picking myself off the floor from laughing so hard, I just started doing it myself for about $75 or so. It's just a car and an engine and the process is no more complicated than on any other vehicle.
Also, I don't care if there's any record of oil changes or not. I stick the oil/filter receipts in the giant mess of paperwork on my work bench. I'm sure I'll get around to organizing that some day.

Easy there. In my shop I'm confident of the service techs. I'm sure not all shops are the same. The person who helped me builds mid-80s engines, is a very nice man, races 911 cars frequently, and owns several 911 cars of varying expense himself. I happen to trust them only because I watched a $250,000 mid-1960s car roll into/out of the shop. That, and because the car's only been serviced there, but there are several indy shops that I'm sure do a good job near me (although the last one scuffed my 944 rims, probably because the less-than-senior tech was tasked to change my tires).

oil change price
In Canada, in my city (small town 300k) not sure why we have a gigantic Porsche dealership as I have never seen a 911 convertible anywhere around the city they asked for $350 plus 13% tax so about 420 all in or 425 USD.
