I was curious about those oil filter conversion kits for sale on places like Flat 6 - what exactly do they do? Do they allow you to use a regular screw-on oil filter vs. the cartridge type of filter? Any downsides to this? Is this a common mod - something I should consider? I was thinking of doing my own oil changes this summer, and if this makes life easier I will definately consider getting one.

Thanks for any info on this!
I installed the LNE spin-on oil filter adapter. They claim that it does a better job than oem. I can't vouch for that, but I can say that it's easier to buy filters because you can get them any place. One downside is that it takes more effort to cut them open for examination.

Ok, end of the day the car needed an 8-year tune up, including spark plugs, oil change/filter, air/cabin filters, etc. Price of (only) oil plus filter was $132, not including labor. New battery ran $125. Neither of those seem excessive to me; assuming the oil change is 45 minutes to an hour, at $135/hour, the price of doing it myself is less than half, but not absurd by any call to have them do it. Price of keeping all my presets for battery change....priceless.

Total labor was more than parts, which has to be assumed, but at the end of the day I'm quite satisfied. They also complemented my car's insides (engine, not interior that is) as being, "in great shape." That's worth the price of admission, but I'd bet they say that to all the guys....

Wow, you come out swinging, eh? Take it easy and consider that if the lowest paid guy at your local place isn't doing your oil changes, you're probably paying too much. This isn't rocket science, it's just letting some oil drain out of an engine.

Since you just don't get it, let me spell it out for you. My local place has only two guys, both of them well trained, experienced professionals. There is no one else. If your place has a bunch of paid flunkies on staff, maybe you're the one who is paying too much.

I actually 'enjoy' my annual oil/filter change every summer. It isn't difficult to visually check brake pad wear, suspension, exhaust, tires etc. and it allows me to know my porsche better. It's also a significant savings to me that I can put towards other purchases like wheels and tires...
