Hi rennlist members!
I'm new to this forum, but i have been 'lurking' here for a couple of months reading information about Porsche stuff and it's a great website![Cheers](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/beerchug.gif)
First of all i'm from Europe, Belgium, i hope this isn't a problem. Sorry for my English, it's not 100% perfect.
I have owned several Porsche's already.
I started with a '79 924 about 10 years ago. Great car, had a lot of fun with it. Though it isn't the fastest, but awesome feeling in the corners.
Ather the 924 i upgraded to an '77 911SC 2.7L Coupé (it was an U.S model). It had a special (sort of lime) light green color. It really was one of a kind. This was my first 911 and boy ooh boy! After this beauty, which i miss, i bought an '78 911 Targa SC 3.0L which i completely restored to new condition (Did this in 2008). Painted in every detail and corners, and put a new 3.2 engine in it. Still own the car and love it so much. She is basically my 2nd wife.
Back in 2010 i bought my son a '83 944 2.5L, full original car. Great balanced car, love it!
So far my Porsche history, i hope i didnt bore you with it
:
2 months ago i bought an '98 996 C2 Coupé. First of, beautiful car, you can't compare it with an air-cooled 911 especially the comfort is a huge advantage.
So i bought the car (89K miles) from a guy who goes to the same (independent) Porsche garage i go to. The man who owns this garage is also a good friend and he knew the car for about 5 years.
A couple weeks ago we did a Inspection test, the engine was taken out and did some pressior tests on the cylinders, did a clutch test, and last but not least an IMS Bearing shaft inspection.
Everything was perfect, no oil leaks, no air leaks, ...
But today (on my Birthday btw!!
) the car made a weird rattle noise coming from between the 2 rear wheels (looks like it's coming from the transmission). It's also noticeable when sitting in the car with the doors closed. The car makes this sound only when it's warmed up.
The strange thing is, that, when i press in the clutch he stops making the rattle noise. It is still the first clutch though (89K miles). But im not having problems with it, works fine.
I also noticed quite some vibration while sitting in the car (changed the engine mounts by the way).
So, thursday (26 jan) im going back to the garage with it. But i cant stop thinking about it, totally freaking out. Could it be the clutch, transmission, IMS?
It would be an huge help if someone recognizes this particular problem and could tell me about it![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
A full inspection was done, so i honestly dont get it.![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I deeply hope i didnt bore anyone of you, due to this long text.
Anyway, greatings from a Porsche fan from Belgium

The engine was out? So during installation something isn't lined up or tightened up right.
bring it back to the mechanic!!
Also I think it is impossible to inspect the IMS bearing and say it is OK from outside the car.
It may not be leaking ,but that doesn't mean it is all right.

Forgot: the reason why the engine was out was because i had to change the oil separator. And that's why an inspection was done also.
Thanks for the reply. He will definitly check it out, it must be fixed. It's weird that the problem now occurs, because it was checked a couple weeks ago. It drove fine till now.
And yes, it's not leaking. Oil was changed, no particles where found in the oil filter,...
Note: i'm not a pro at this btw. Can a flywheel cause such a rattle noise too?

Topic with similar noise: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...tch-again.html
I seem to have the same noise, although it's not as loud and frequently. But the crackling sound is very similar.
Makes the sound in neutral, stops when pressing in the clutch.

We never found out how that similar noise was fixed.
Could be your flywheel. Could be any of the clutch parts.
Hopefully it's not the transmission.
Good Luck and please let us know what is found when it's fixed.

Guido, welcome aboard.
Sorry about your problems, I would not start the car again.....I have a feeling the transmission will need to come out for further diagnosis.....BTW beautiful cars......
What I find strange is that it only makes the sound when it is warm??

@ francars
Beautiful looking car! You seem to have the grey interior aswell?
The only noticeable difference seem to be the 2 black rubber bumpers at the rear of your car.

Welcome Guido 911, your SC is beautiful as is the 996. As mentioned, take your 996 back to the mechanic, maybe he will know since he just performed some work on your car. Hope it is something simple to fix for you. I still occasionally miss my 79'SC, glad you still own yours.

I had a car tht did that too, only when warm, only when in neutral and clutch "out" as in no foot on pedal. tinyest force on pedal and noise gone. that car had a spring that made the throw out bearing nudge against the fingers of the clutch, it was missing. spring in, quiet ever since. totally different car, but typically clutch systems are variations on the same theme. Also, something changes after recent tinkering - look where you just tinkered, it'll probably be nearby.
