996 parts clean out

logray I really like those mesh grills. I may have to get me some. How do they attach? Is it possible to put them on without removing the bumper?

I made them from a roll of 1/8" galvanized diamond mesh from the building materials section at home depot. About $10 for a huge roll of it. Easy to cut and form. On my old bumper I panted them black, but decided on the raw stainless look for the new bumper. I like the raw look better.
On the old bumper I attached them from behind with screws and auto goop. Totally invisible from the front.
On the new bumper I attached them only with auto goop from kmart (very strong stuff and about $5 per tube). Screws are pretty unnecessary with this stuff.
You have to remove the bumper, but that isn't very hard. Maybe a dozen fasteners or so, I would give it 30 minute tops the first time you do it. Get a helper because the bumper is large and awkward.
Good thing is while I had it on, it kept a TON of crap out of my radiators... which is a regular cleaning job if you drive where there are a lot of leaves...
If you follow the turbo threads, those guys pretty much have to do this because the bumper openings are much larger... and they have perfected the art (even companies that sell pre made cut-outs). Our NA cars have the same problem, albeit much smaller openings.
If you've ever removed your bumper you would see what I'm talking about.
Funny thing is, this ended up in Tom's for sale thread!!!!

Hi Tom,
I finally received the steering wheel a few days ago. All worked out with the US shipping, thanks for helping out. I just had to wait two weeks for my sister to come back to Sweden from the US!
The steering wheel looked great, leather looked new as you said. I have no idea what you actually did with the electronics, especially the glued tip switch, but I replaced it with my old wiring.
Did you just paint the tip buttons over the original finish? Or did you sand them down?
Thanks from Sweden!

I'll post some pics of it, but it's in pretty sad shape (well at least for my standards). It needs to be completely sanded down and repainted, there is a section that has some cracking in it, and some of that plastic bumper filler compound would probably work, but then primed and painted. The underside is pretty trashed (lowered), and I think most of the tabs are OK, a couple are broken though.
I guess if you want it, its yours for whatever it would cost to ship plus maybe some gas money to get it to greyhound. Putting it on a Greyhound bus was actually pretty reasonable, only about $60 to get it from so cal to a bus station nearby in Sacramento. I didn't have to drive very far to pick it up. The best part is the box Tom put it in took up an entire cavity in the bus, so there was no possible way someone could have crushed it with their luggage or another package. And I still have the box!

Logray, My bumper is about the same but also has "Trailerhitch" mod smack dab in the middle. Guess I wait till a clean one pops up. I see I also need the C4 bumper with the center cooler opening.
