3.4 vs 3.6 motors?

better cooling... absolutely... if you track the 3.4 you will need to install a 3rd radiator in front...
more downforce...?? you will probably throw away the stock suspension in favor of the factory ROW 030 and that puts "rake" from rear to front that generates more downforce...

I disagree with this. I have personally tracked MKI 996s and I know others who have done the same(all cars without a 3rd radiator install) with zero cooling issues. In fact, I believe these cars run cooler on track, because of the constant high airflow over the radiators, than they do in summer stop and go traffic. Of course, if you are a pro diver capable of pushing the car to/past its limits during an entire track session then your results may vary. In addition, the U.S. spec suspension on the 996 MKI cars is more than capable for everyone but the more experienced track nuts.
Also, I've driven a few MKII 996s(I own an MKI) and IMHO the extra HP and TQ does not make a significant diference in regards to driving impressions. Yes the 3.6s have more low end TQ but I think the extra weight of the MKII cars negates most of that advantage.

I prefer the 3.6. The most common issue I've come across on the 996 is the variable cam actuators, which are easier to replace on a 3.6.
I feel there's a significant upgrade with the MK2 cars, it's not just the engine.

Thanks a lot guys. All great feedback! I pulled the trigger on a '02 996 today. Should have it by Thursday. I'll get the requisite pics and bio up soon there-after. Best, Aaron
