Default Burning smell?

Still getting familiar with my new to me '99 cab. Clutch was replaced right away (a thread in another post).

Before and post clutch replacement, my wife and I have noticed a moderately strong burning smell, possibly more so on driver's side than passenger's. Definitely not coolant or oil but not a standard hot engine bay kind of smell. My initial guess was the slipping clutch was doing itself in quickly as it smelled like friction material (brakes or clutch). But new clutch and same smell. Its not overwhelming, but more than I'd expect. The smell from the engine bay doesn't seem as strong as from near the rear wheels. Thoughts?

thanks and regards, Scott

Hard to say. My C4S and every other 911 I've ever driven always has a bit of a burning smell after a spirited drive. It smells a little more like burning rubber usually. It's quite normal for these cars. I'm not sure if that's what you're smelling or if it's something else.

99% normal smell.

I think it's from small particles of tire flicking on the mufflers and burning...

Thanks to all the quick replies (and good grammar and spelling??!! odd for any automotive forum I've ever been on...)

Swung by the shop and they agreed that they could smell something but weren't alarmed. Someone crawled underneath and said everything was dry. Then they used a laser thermometer and said the brake temps were reasonable, 55c up front and 40c in the rear.

I had an '85 GTI that must have been dunked in cosmoline but I don't remember it smelling like this.

Guess I'll be on the look out for a 996 pulling into a parking lot, garage, or driveway. I'll run up and ask them if they don't mind me smelling their rear end......
