Default 996 4S exhaust/engine note at parking speeds

Hi

I've just picked up a 2002 996 4S, without sports exhaust.

When maneuvering at parking speeds, the engine note changes substantially to a note that i can only compare to if it had a sports exhaust fitted. is this normal - does the engine mapping change when on load at these low speeds?

Thanks

Gareth.

Are you sure you don't have sport exhaust? Some of the early 996 cars had the OEM sport exhaust system without a button on the dash to deactivate it like the later cars and the current cars.

That's what I've been told. I wouldn't have believed it unitl I talked about it with another C4S owner who had that configuration from the factory.

I thought there was one at http://www.autoatlanta.com/.

I haven't used it, but I believe others on this board have. You can also contact Loren if you're a contributing member of www.renntech.org and he can help you with this.

I think that was on 1st gen 996's with the 3.4l engine. I don't believe that any of the factory PSE equipped C4S's would have shipped without the switch.

But I could be wrong.

That could be the case... I'm not really sure. I think the VIN check should provide the answer.

If he doesn't have sport exhaust, what else could it be? Perhaps some kind of aftermarket exhaust?

Maybe a PSE that was dealer installed without the switch? But the fact that it apparently has the speed actuation for euro noise regs between 50-70kph means that it is somehow wired in. Could someone have installed the PSE system from a 3.4?

maybe some good pics of exhaust? Make sure you get a good shot of both edges of the mufflers.

The renntech online decoder is very basic. For a list of options, you have to email Loren. I think you may be able to get this by emailing the VIN to the folks at www.suncoastparts.com also.

Well, there's our answer!

This intrigued me enough, that I search all the emails I had 6 years ago when I was looking for an 2002 or 2003 C4S. Sure enough, there was on that the owner claimed had the factory PSE, but the dash had no switch...I don't think I believed him at the time.

Simple: just take a picture of your mufflers and post it here. Take a few...
