its a manual release.... there is no lock on the cable, sounds like you have a mechanical issue or not pulling hard enough?.... Am I missing something?

Does your engine lid unlock?

What's the value of the valet key if you can still unlock the trunk with it?

Yes, the engine lid cable pulls without issue. The trunk release is locked as if the door was closed (Porsche only lets you release the hood with the driver's door opened, for safety I guess).

Press down on the hood at the crest, it might not be latched completely and not allowing the cable to do it's job.

I'll give all these suggestions a try when I get home tonight, thanks.

To clarify, IS there an emergency cable release for pre-02 manual cable release cars?

I would bet no, makes no sense to have an emergency release for a cable operated latch

Unless it's over-engineered, like all German cars!? What if the cable release breaks, or the cable snaps, etc? There's got to be an emergency release cable!

I think I know where to look for the release - thanks. Hopefully I can see it through the hole for the side marker! Stick a hangar in there, pull, done!

+1 on having another person push up/down on the badge while the other person pulls on the hood lever in the car.

Yes these car have alternative pulls.... for both the front hood and engine lid. I moved them to a more convenient location for occasions like you mention.

The security system on a 2000 does lock the trunk release lever. However unlocking the door manually with the keys unlocks my lever. All my remote transmitters have failed so I use the key in the door all the time (got to get some new remotes one of these days). Sometimes I have to hold the key inthe unlock position a little longer to get the latch to unlock as occasionally the doors will unlock but not the trunk lock. So unless the valet key is sensed by the lock mechanism this should work.

Drum roll please......

I got in the car, locked the doors, un-locked the doors - and am now able to open the trunk!

So, LOGRAY and Doug got it

Yay!
