For the headlight I bought some headlight protection film and once they were on I used a blade to cut the center part following the lines that are already on the headlight. Took me a couple of time as I was hardly pressing on the film to avoid marking the headlight cover. But there is a line on the headlight anyways so it should be hardly noticeable even if you mark it a bit.
It is a bit scary considering the price of those headlight but I got a rock chip on one of them so I wanted them protected as much as possible anyways. Also I am a sucker for the oval headlights.

Not sure if a silver car would look as good, the film makes the car look more like a 997 because the dark film blends in with the dark color car, more so on a dark grey/black type of color, I might try it on my car come spring time.

Not sure if it's the angle of the picture or lighting but I'm not felling the headlight mod. In the picture that area looks darker than the body paint which gives the front end a "black eye" look. Perhaps you can post other photos that give a different look at it.
To me one of the key reasons you buy a 996 vs other Porsche's is the appeal of the non "frog eye" style headlights....but that's another debate.....
