What's should I set the price at?

I'm working with 2 VW/Porsche dealers now. One of ten has two 2004 996s listed at $44k with similar mileage and options. Crazy asking prices but I'm hoping this one will provide a higher trade offer due to this. I'll know in the next couple of days.

I purchased an '02 targa this spring for <<$30K private sale (but the guy was moving to Europe and had to sell) ... slightly higher mileage and not quite as many options as your's. I had gone to local dealer and they had an ;02 targa in very good condition with 40K ish miles - asking $33K back then - so assume I could have purchase for 10% less - but that means the dealer would have bought it for 10% less than that - (or lower) I'm guessing.
Targa's are pretty rare - so if you find someone like me that really wants a targa you might be able to get premium - plus for low miles and well maintained.
I'd advertise in the low 30's - and you should be able to get close to 30 (maybe a little under) if you wait. I'd be interested to see what a dealer would offer you - be surprised if it is more than $27 unless they are screwing you somewhere else in the trade - especially in this economy ...
But sounds like very nice car .....

They can't screw me on the GTI purchase. I've checked a few VW dealers and they are at invoice or up to $300 over invoice. So we'll see what happens.
If it all shakes out, then bye bye Jeep, hello 1984-1994 911.

$47 sounds very high for a 996 ... you can see 997's without too many miles starting around that price now ... at least in CA.
GTI's are very nice - I used to own a 1986 ... great/fun car to drive .... and totally practical as well - haven't driven a newer one - but last trip to Germany I had a Golf 1.4 TSI rental with PDK - bombing down the autobahn at 200KMH - even that thing was fun - and close to 40MPG .....
Good luck

Before I get the AC 911, I'll first have to sell my 1987 Wrangler to make some room in the garage. I've had it since 1996 and have put about 50k miles on it in 15 years, so it will be tough to let go. And it's never been to a shop either...super easy to work on. I pulled the starter a couple of weeks ago in about 10 minutes and didn't even have to get a floor jack out...just roll underneath it.
