Default FS? 1999 996 intermix just showed up here

This is from a local board called C&C in NJ

"Well, when I say I used it as a daily driver, I mean it. My 1999 911 has 178,000 miles on it. For the most part it's been very reliable except for a little nagging issue of spontaneous engine combustion.

The first engine died with 95000 miles. Something about ring wear (Porsche doesn't really tell you what's wrong). That was replaced under warrantee, so it wasn't a hit to my pocketbook. Now, the second engine bit the dust with about 85000 miles on it. "Intermix" is the problem. I.e. oil in the coolant indicating a crack somewhere, probably the heads. Porsche's answer: replace the engine. They answer this so fast to so many problems, it's a bit crazy. The dealer said they don't even need to look at the car. I described the intermix problem over the phone, and the guy said I need a new engine. Case closed.

With a car worth $10k to $12k on a good day with all the stars aligned, and $8k plus to install a new engine, the math just doesn't add up. The car's worth more in parts. So to a breaker it will go.

Unless there's someone out there just itching for a dead 911 ... ;-)

Ross"

Anew engine (remanufactured) at the dealer is going to be closer to $20,000 than $8,000. Here is a chance for someone who wants a dead car or wants to rebuild the engine.

You can't just pull the head off and get it fixed?

Yep you can, as long as there is not collateral damage.

DIY you can fix a cracked head for 3k ish, again assuming it is just a cracked head.

He just listed it on ebay and he's a member over on RT.org...

If it wasn't such high miles I would consider snapping it up and fixing it. But I wouldn't be looking at a huge profit, maybe 1-2k after repairs and flipping it.

Edit: holy crap $10k blue book for a car with good engine and that many miles. Wow.

Ok, staaaaay away. Unless you need a donor car or want to part it out.

Aren't rollers worth $5K? Chassis with that many miles cannot be worth that. All other components will probably have to get replaced or freshened..

Yeah, price is too high IMHO, he should take the breakers offer.

trouble with intermix is it could be head replacement (less expensive) or block replacement (more expensive)
