Default How do you take off the plastic bit that surronds stereo & houses various switches

Hi there

Last night I pushed my demister switch and it was obviously loose and as I pushed it, it came out of its holder and went back into the dash. I am keen to pull off the surround so i can put it back into place but am not sure how the silver plastic surround comes off.

The car is a 2002 996 Cab.

My guess is that it can be pried off with a butter knife but want to make sure in case I give it a try and break the plastic and make my dash look terrible.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks. So I lever it up a little so i can get a finger in and then yank? I am just worried about snapping it and then the pushed in demister button will be the least of my cosmetic problems.

Small plastic spatula is better than your finger.

Use a plastic putty knife. Start at the bottom on one side and work your way around prying it up. It should pop out pretty easily.

I just did this last week -- I wouldnt yank. I bought a small plastic/ spackling knife -- composition of the plastic is pretty soft so it does not scratch. Worked like a charm.

I picked up a set of plastic pry bars at harbor freight for 6 or 7 dollars. I find that I use them frequently for small prying jobs. They won't ding your interior the way a butter knife would, plus they are cheap.

Butter knife and a t-shirt around the blade. Pry.

The switch should snap right back in place.

+1. I have a similar set that is blue. They give you much more confidence when prying plastic apart. Cheap investment.

Thanks for all the help. Just managed to do it with a kitchen knife wrapped in a t-shirt (to avoid scratching). Was a lot simpler than I thought. Now perhaps I can move onto ripping out the rubbish stereo that came in the car and put in something that plays more than just the base of any given song!!!

Just turn up your RPM and do a FisterD muffler mod.
