Overheard at the carwash
So I'm at the automated car wash today (with the Jetta, not the 911) and there's a guy in line in front of me with a 997 Carrera S cab. We're waiting where they bring out the cars to dry them and a couple of guys working at the car wash start oogling his car. Then I hear this:
workers: Nice car! Who's "porsch" is this?
owner: Mine.
workers: Wow, what's it got in it?
owner: Huh?
workers: What's it got, a V8?
owner: No...an in-line six.
I'm sure he ended up with scratched wheels from the wheel tracks in the car wash and I can only imagine all the fine scratches in the paint from the hand drying with red shop rags. Just thought you all would appreciate this.

I've seen several 996s even Turbos advertised with V6s. Sad that there are many Porsche owners that know very little about what they drive. And it doesn't end there, a lot of weathly individuals buy whatever they feel will make a statement actually knowing very little about what they drive. Nor do they really care.

They liked the car, should have left it at that. I am sure they do not know much about the engine since they are towel boys at a car wash. Nothing wrong with that. Hell, I grew up with a Lambo poster in my bedroom before I joined the Military...and a Porsche 959 poster....did not know much about their engines, but knew I wanted one.

First question I get about the 996 from everyone I meet -- women at bars, kids on the street, codgers in retirement homes etc ... -- is whether or not I've done an IMS upgrade.

well if you want to get technical, the pistons in a flat six are all "inline" with each other, they just happen to face in opposite directions, so he's not entirely inaccurate.
Then again, who cares? not everybody is an enthusiast.
