Default Drove a 993 Today

Detailed a 28,000 mile 993 C4S for a neighbor today and was the first time in a long while that I've driven one. My daily driver is a '99 996, which sees about 10,000 miles a year. It's really amazing how much the cars are alike, yet how different they are. The 996 is more comfortable and usable for everyday activities, yet the 993 feels more like my 356, carved out of a single piece of steel. If I had to choose between the two, I'd opt for a bigger garage where I could park both!

The 993 never lets you forget you're driving an "old German car", with a significant percentage of 356 in its DNA.

As you mentioned the two are close enough to let you know they share similar DNA but different enough where you really need the ability to choose one or the either based on your mood.

Default 993 musings

As a former owner of two 993s ('96 coupe and then a '97 coupe) and current 996cabrio owner, I frequently think about both the differences and similarities. But if I were to really regress to an earlier 911, I would drop back to my beloved '80 911SC. Something about the smells, sounds, etc., that gives these SCs a special charm.

funny when I drive 993's I think of how fancy and modern they are - I get to see and sit in quite a few early cars (70's to 50's) and although I want the heck to have one I dont believe they give me as much seat time as the 3.2 does....the earlier the better, but the less able it is to be a good commuter unless you have deep pockets - like you, i need a bigger garage (and wallet)

The 993's suspension is very similar to the 996..... I just like the 996 headlights better. and..... That door clunk on the 993, Nikki ice!

I feel the same way about my old 79' SC, it was fantastic but certainly not modern like my 996.

I'll be doing a full paint correction on it in a few weeks and will post pics then. This is the second time that the man has owned it. He sold it a few years ago because he didn't drive it enough, then went searching for another because he missed it so. Found one on-line in Pennsylvania that looked a lot like his old car, and after contacting the dealer found out that it WAS his old car. He immediately sent a deposit.

It's crazy, superior to a 996 in many ways, and inferior in many others. Like Ivangene says, I need a bigger garage and wallet!

Every time we drive by a 993 or earlier, to torture me my wife says -- "now that's a Porsche". She just loves the round headlights and more pugnacious styling. To be honest, so do I. But at this point, I see the 993 as a stunning collector car that I would love to own but not something I could use as a daily driver.
