Ok, after 40 years of off and on air-cooled P-car ownership, I bought my first water pumper. And I am stocked. It is a '99 996 with a late '05 factory rebuild motor. PPI was pretty much as expected, so the budget for repairs will be enough to cover everything. I take delivery on Monday.

A few questions, if you will. What are the best DIY sites? Any "must read" threads on any forums? In particular I am looking for options on replacing the original suspension.

Look forward to becoming a part of the forum!

Welcome to Water World! How many miles on the new motor? Did the car come with Any other mods? Renntech has a lot if DIY articles , as does RL. Try some searches on ROW suspension bits for the 996 along with X74 which a few guys have done. Exhaust mods aplenty also for the 996(I.e. Fister D's ) and so on. If your looking to build a part time track star, start by selling a kidney or any other body parts you can do without. GL.

Congrats. PICS!

So I see a 993 in your sig. What are your thoughts going from 993 to 996? I recently picked up my 996 but still have this thought in the back of my head that I would have picked up a 993 if I could have afforded it.

I know this is a polarizing question but since you have first hand experience I was just curious.

Just want me to spill my guts, no???

To be totally honest, when I decided it was time to retire my totally stock SC from DE duty, my first thought was a 996. But I initially got distracted by a '97 993. However it failed its PPI with a significant oil leak from the base of cylinder #4. So I went back to the 996 I had actually found a few days earlier.

Which is better? I have no clue. Too many point, counter point facts. Ask me in late November after I get the 996 prep'ed and on the track at VIR.

From the pictures sent to me by my seller. Looks good at 10 feet, but needs a lot of TLC.

With the suspension, I want something pretty good for DE's and decent for pleasure driving. In other words, track takes a bit of a priority over street. The X74 is unknown for either my SC or 993 and it sounds really good. And I further researched the H&R Clubsport and it may have possibilities. I'd love PSS10's but they have gotten so darn expensive.

Welcome to the misunderstood water cooled camp. By the way, my 79' SC was certainly one of the best Porsche ownership experiences I've had, but I wouldn't go back after owning the same Porsche in your pic for the last 5 years.
