Newbie Q: Would you buy this 996?
Hi folks.... first and foremost, you have a great forum here. Been lurking for a while, and it's a superb resource and vibrant community.
I've been driving a first gen RX-7 (well, various ones) for about 10 years. The current one is a very nice car (about 300 hp in a 2500lb vehicle) but it has its limits, especially with a solid rear axle.
Recently, as I've got the bug to do something different, I've looked at a 911 or two for sale in my area. I've done some research, and I'm preparing to do all the right things: PPI, watch for RMS, be prepared to spend for an LN IMS replacement for security purposes, and maybe watch for AOS and clutch issues as well.
I've run across a 1999 C2 coupe with 67,000 miles. Six speed (of course) and clean. Color is mirage metallic (not my favorite) and clean expect for one minor door ding and a 2 inch rash on a bumper.
The price, after some negotiation, is $19,000. Does that seem like a realistic price? Or should I look for better deals, especially since I need to reserve some funds for the IMS bearing and a future of $150 oil changes? Should I even consider a 1999 at all, and move on to later years where there is more fixes to the water-cooled platform?
Thanks!

sounds fair to me...what do you plan do do with the car? drive daily, track, weekener, polish it and stick it in the garage?
99' is a wonderful car IMO and that debate will never end.....

Seems pretty fair. '02+ will get you some improvements but will also cost more. It sounds like you've done your research on the boards. Get the PPI done and see how the car comes out! Best of luck!

P.S. Bring on the "way too much," "awesome price," and "fair deal" comments.

price sounds fair ... you can see some 996;s for less - but higher mileage- and even then - not much less
an '02 in good condition with similar miles would probably cost you $8-$10K more - so if you budget $4K or so for IMS, RMS, AOS, Clutch , Water Pump (if it wasn't done) you probably have yourself a good deal
But also remember - it is not just IMS that can fail - you might eventually need chain tensioners, wear pads for cam etc. that can also be expensive jobs and 3.4l engines can also fail due to cracks in block etc. But you only live once- so if you worry about all that, maybe better not to own ! Just drive and enjoy !

I'm a bit biased since I own a MY99, 6 spd coupe and have for almost 5 years now. Absolutely no regrets since day one, and with only 56k miles on the odometer, there should be plenty of life left. If you like the Porsche and how it drives, then perform your due diligence and proceed with the deal. I think it sounds good.(matter of fact, if prices stay firm I might consider selling for another Porsche at some point). GL

no -- is that important? What does it indicate?
Another bewildered moment -- what changed after 1999?

I bought my '99 C2 Coupe several years ago and I love it more than any car I have ever owned! I really haven't had any problems with it other than normal maintenance items.
