Default fuel cleaner sitting in tank

So my 996 has been sitting in the garage since late July, and will be until late September. My dad was by my place and I asked him to put some fuel stabilizer in there (like Sta-Bil) to keep the ethanol from turning solid in all of my fuel lines.

Well he couldn't find any but called and told me that he put some "fuel system cleaner" in the tank, which I'm assuming is the pure alcohol that STP and other similar brands sell.

So now I'm assuming that I won't have any solid ethanol in my fuel because it will have all leaked out through the hole in my fuel tank when I get back in September.

I recently returned to my US home after 2 mos. in Germany and have similar intervals away from my place there w/cars both places. I never use stabilizers, only disconnect batteries. Never a problem. Most fuels are already 10% alcohol. Wouldn't give it much more thought...It'll be fine.

Come on guys where's all the fear-mongering?

I've had fuel sitting in a boat for 12 months without fuel stabilizer (oops). I chose to drain it, because I think the shelf life w/o treatment is around 6 months or so.

If you are really that paranoid just buy a $2 siphon from your auto parts store and a $20 gas can and drain the gas, however much might be in there.

Seriously though 3 months is fine for gas even without stabilizer.

I missed the fear mongering part...

O M G - - dont try and strat it without a complete fluid change of ALL fluids, new seats, a steering wheel change, removal of airbags, new tires with fresh air, change the cabin air filter and headlights (samonilla poisoning - fried egg thing) new glass ESP front window and I would get a new set of keys just to be safe. - then tow it around behind a horse for a few blocks in nuetral, pray the rosery 6 times...tow it around the block once more, call the fire dept and have your neighbor (you know, the one you only like because he is your neighbor) start it so in case it blows up...if it starts shut it off right away and reapeat all the steps 2 more times to be sure... then drive it straight to the dealer and sell it for 1/2 what its worth just to get out from under it

or, like I said - dont worry about it, check the tire presure and drive it

Roll it out of the garage before starting so the ensuing fire won't spread to the garage and house.

Three months isn't a problem. You should use a fuel stabilzer if it's going to sit for more than six months, and it has to go in with the fresh gas. Adding Stabil to already old gas really doesn't do anything.

If you want 'fear' how do you know your dad isn't taking your car out on the sly?

Seriously, not sure what any fuel additive could do to the tank. The tank is not metal put some very special plastic that appears to be quite resistent to whatever one puts in the gas tank.

Couple of months sitting around while the fuel won't be the freshest fuel the car should be ok.

Next time try to plan ahead though and put some fuel stablizer in if you want to use any before you put the car up. If nothing else using some stablizer should give you some peace of mind.

Sincerely,

Macster.
