Default Brake job question

Getting ready to change out my front and rear brake pads (rotors are good) and I have a question. Do you have to replace the front & rear brake pad dampeners or do you re-use the ones on there?

It depends on whether you destroyed them while trying to remove them from the pads. Sometimes they're really sticky so they're difficult to get off.

But if you're careful enough you should be able to reuse them.

Save yourself some time and money and just stop using them. With stock pads I get no squeel when I don't run them. If you do decide you want them I've got a new set from the dealer just sitting in the bag ready to go to a new home.

You're lucky as my sport pads were quiet at first but now squeal all the time. I'm going to buy some stock pads now and only put these on when I go to the track.

I installed Porsche Sport pads last year and they were quiet until this spring when they began to squeal. Since a weekend at the track in June they have been quiet, again. Maybe this is related to pad bedding.

I should clarify that I do get squeal with the sport pads. I run stock most of the year and swap in the sport before events. Since my last track time (couple of weeks ago) I left in the sport. I do get a little squeal from them but I don't mind for this short time period.

My info is for at least Boxsters of that vintage Porsche no longer requires the pad dampeners be used. The use of the backing plate pads has been discontinued.

I managed to salvage the original ones the 1st brake job I did on my Boxster but after that I stopped using the things.

My advice is to check with your local cealer parts department and see if the dampeners have been discontinued. If they have then there you go. If they have not then you have to either reuse the ones you currently have or buy new ones.

Since the cost of these dampeners is not that high and it is not like you have to replace them every other week I don't really see a problem. Saving a few dollars at the expense of unnecessarily noisy brakes seem like false economy to me.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I have an autocross this weekend so maybe that'll help them - but then again I don't usually build up a lot of speed during those events so it might not make a difference.

No track event for me scheduled until September so I might have to revert to stock for the next month or so.

There is one 10 minutes from my house at the Charlotte Motor Speedway next month but I'd still need to buy a rollbar and get it installed. That's one of the disadvantages with having a cabrio...

So instead we're planning on going away that same weekend for a quick beach trip! At least I won't be sitting home depressed that I'm not on the track!
