Moldy smell when I turn on the car and the air starts blowing

The good news is turning off the AC for 30 seconds works to keep out the stinky smell. But I still want to figure out why its happening. Awesome advice so far guys, thanks!

The heater core is downstream of/from the A/C evaporator so unless you recirculate inordinately HEATED (uncomfortable, that) cabin airflow.....
Besides which in our cars the heater core is ALWAYS at engine coolant temperature, no modulation or shut off to coolant flow.
