Has anyone ever rebuilt a 996 headlight?
Title says it all, couldn't find anything by searching and am wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt a headlight? I have a good working one with a scratched lens that can't be buffed out and a donor headlight with a great lens, but non-functional mechanicals. Essentially, I need to trade the 'guts' from one to the other. Anyone ever done this?

the front lens cover can be removed by placing the entire headlight in the oven at ~200 F and checking frequently for it to loosen up... to put the other one on - people use sealant/silicone?
there was a thread on 6speed a couple years ago that I have never found again...guys were opening them up and painting the insides of the headlights (really they came out awesome!) and no one seemed to have an issue with removing the front lens this way... wish I could find that thread.

do you have to pull off all of the ballasts and wires? or just stick the whole thing in? Ive got a litronic that is off its ball sockets and I need to get inside to get it back on the tracks... Ive been wanting to do this for months..
ok sorry to revive, it loos like I need to completely dissamble everything that can come off before popping into the oven.

I've done this a few times and not too bad just takes a lot of patience to slowly get the lens off. BKJWhipple if the ball has come off the socket you don't have to disassemble the light at all. That's actually a pretty easy fix to do. Has happened to a few owners I know. The repair for that is from the back of the light not from the front. Pop off the rear cover and unplug the wires for easy access what you'll need to do is get some rope or strong wire and loop it around the ball portion (white part) and get the other end around so you have both ends together. Make sure the loop is under neath the base of the pivot of the ball. Once the loop is all the way around and you have both ends all you need to do is guide the ball back into the socket and pull real hard until it pops right in. You'll definetly hear it pop right in. It's just like a shoulder popping back in.

bkjwhipple... did that fix your problems with your lights? usually happens when someone keeps adjusting the lights using the adjusting mechanisms and they turn them too far out or also happened once during a strong impact or hitting a huge bump that causes the ball to get out of the socket... should be easy fix to do just got to use force to get it back it and don't worry you're not gonna break anything.. Good luck

1 is fixed.... The other seems to be too damaged...? Not sure but hard to see in there... I feel like taking the lens off will allow me to see better what is going on.
I bought these lights off of craigslist. Appeared perfect till I installed and noticed them pointing straight down tried to adjust and nothing.... Took them out and both were off all of the sockets. My thoughts are they came off a carr that was rearended.... I will try the lens method this weekend. Thanks for your advice.
