That doesn't seem to make any sense because when only the last two digits change on the part number, the higher number is the "newer" variant. That happens frequently with Porsche parts, but I don't see how v60 gets "superseded" by v53. If you go to Suncoast Porsche's website you'll see the 996 filter they sell with their oil change kit is v60: http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...ry_Code=996Oil

I really don't think a v53 oil filter will cause any problem at all, but in all likelihood the dealer just has lots of v53 in stock and they want to use them up. What would bother me is it sounds like they are just making a story up rather than being honest with you.

Well I see that the 53 is used in the newer 997s so maybe that is why? The guys at this dealer seem pretty cool and he said that is the filter they use.

I'll order some of the 60 online next oil change. This one seemed to fit well and hopefully won't ruin the motor in 5 or 6k miles

PET catalog shows v53 for the 3.4L 996 engines and v60 for the 3.6L engines (MY02-04). Also shows v53 for the 997, so go figure. I believe all these cartridge filters are pretty much the same for 911, Boxster and Cayenne and I don't think you'll have any issues whatsoever. Your dealer probably just stocks the one to keep things simple for their inventory.

Old thread, but I just had the same problem with a 53 filter that did not fit my C4S. The difference between the 53 and 60 filter is the inside diameter. Some enginges have a larger pickup tube that will not fit the 53 filter.

These cars have the small inside diameter 53 filter:
- 996 Carrera and Carrera 4 (1999-01)
- 996 Turbo and Turbo S Coupe (2001-05)
- 996 GT2 and GT3 Coupe (2002-05)

These cars need the bigger 60 filter:
- 996 Targa Targa (2002)
- 996 Carrera 4 (2002-04)
- 996 Carrera and Carrera 4S (2002-05)

it doesn’t bypass as it’s a full flow filter , you can use a filter mag with it & the stock filter housing has been known to burst in track use .
the spin on is way easier to find filters for as it uses a corvette filter , so if you get an oil change at a drive through , they will have one in stock .
A magnetic drain plug is a nice pair with it .
