HELP:( Did the dealer sell me the wrong oil filter?!
I got all setup for my first oil change (03 C4S). Got the oil drained and went to pull the filter. The dealer told me that 996 107 225 60 was superceded by 996 107 225 53 so that is what I bought.
When I got the old filter out it is 996 107 225 60 and they don't look the same.
When I look them up on pelican I see:
for ..60: Genuine Porsche Oil Filter Insert (Filter Cartridge and Seal), 996 Carrera/Carrera 4 (2002-05), Each
for ..53: Genuine Porsche Oil Filter Insert (Filter Cartridge and Seal), 996 Carrera/Carrera 4 (1999-01), 996 Turbo (2001-2005), 997 Carrera/S/4/4S (2005- ), Cayman/Cayman S, Each
So now I'm confused and not sure I should use this filter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I have read in other places that they are interchangeable but they really look to be made slightly different.
The one ending in 60 has a bit of a lip on the ends while the 53 doesn't. I guess I can call the dealer on Monday and see if they have the other one.
I am just afraid they will tell me the 53 "will work fine". I don't want it to "work fine", I want it to be the right one

996 107 225 53 is for the M96.01/02/04 Engines and 996 107 225 60 is for M96.03 engines only. The 53 is for a 3.4 engine and the 60 is for the 3.6 liter engine. According to my Porsche manuals they are different... Whatever that's worth. I have an 02 C4S and use the 60 filter.

The parts manager at my local dealer tells me that in order to get the right part a VIN must be used. Porsche ties parts numbers, parts upgrades, etc., to VINs.
For my Boxster for instance, I have found this to be the case for the battery, the windshield washer nozzles and some other items I can't recall. For the Turbo I have found the wheel part number changed and oh the coolant cap, the shifter, and I believe the clutch accumulator and clutch slave cylinder.
Anyhow, it is entirely possible that Porsche has issued some bulletin that does away with the varied filters and now has just one filter for as many engines as it will fit.
Places like Pelican I suspect do not get notices of parts number changes so its parts info is out of date.
However, I always when I change the oil in my cars I always compare the old filter to the new one to verify they are as near alike as I can tell. Mainly I look to see they're the same height, the diameters in the ends are the same (bearing in mind the old one's end holes may be enlarged from having been installed in the engine).
I know one person who ordered an oil filter from online and found it to not match what was in the car and in fact not match the filter he bought from the dealer.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I installed the LNE spin-on oil filter adapter. It takes easy-to-find filters:
Napa Gold 1042
Mobil1 M1-107
K&N Gold HP-1007
LNE claims that it does a better job than stock, but who knows. I do know that it's much easier to get filters.

I went to the garage to check the filters I have....
I know for sure I ordered these from the same place....once last year once this year
All of them have the same Mahle part no.
The old ones have -53 stamped stickers on the box
This years filters have -60 stickered on the box...
all look the same as they all have same Mahle part no.

Well hell I guess I'm worrying too much about it. I checked and the -53 is the same height overall as the -60, it just doesn't have that little lip. I've waited all weekend I guess I can wait until the AM to double check with the dealer before I put this one in.

Someone else's 'it will work fine' experiance...
A senior Air Transat maintenance supervisor told concerned mechanics to proceed with an engine swap on one of the airline's Airbus A330s, despite missing parts, a senior company executive confirmed Tuesday.
The executive, in an interview arranged on condition that he not be identified, confirmed that the team's lead mechanic initially told his supervisor that he couldn't finish installing the engine because parts were missing. He was told to install the engine using the procedure for a slightly different model. That installation was improperly completed, resulting in chafing of parts and a major rupture of the fuel line on Air Transat Flight 236 to Lisbon on Aug. 24.
The aircraft lost power in both engines because of fuel starvation, forcing the pilots to glide the airliner to a safe landing at a Portuguese military air base in the Azores — the only land in any direction for more than 1,600 kilometres.
The senior Air Transat executive, while acknowledging that mistakes were made in maintenance, flatly rejected allegations published in The Globe and Mail this week that the company ignored the mechanic's concerns after the engine was installed. Rather, he said, the concerns were addressed, but the installation proceeded improperly.
"Everyone was acting in good faith," the senior executive said. He said that the lead mechanic who, according to a union official, had taped a telephone call with supervisors to substantiate a claim that his concerns were ignored, had raised no doubts about the installation after it was completed.

For anyone looking for closure on this thread, I went to the dealer this morning and they said they use the 53 filter on everything now. He said that Porsche superceded the 60 with the 53.
