Default Warranty Help for a non-CPO

I have a new to me 2002 911 C4 Cabrio with 38k miles and i'm looking to protect myself from ridiculous service bills and of course the scary as hell IMS issue.

I have read through more posts about warranty's than i can count but there seems to be a lot of confusion, at least by me.

Can anyone recommend a good warranty and one that will specifically cover the IMS issue if it rears its ugly head?

Nice looking cab.

Not sure anyone here will "recommend" a warranty company. They may tell you which one they use but the word recommend is rather strong.

Fidelity in Deerfield beach, FL comes to mind but I have not used them and it is not an endorsement.

I have an EFG Warranty that I got last June when I had 48K miles on the car. Here's a link to them. I had one claim so far and they paid $1600, I paid $100 deductible, so far so good.

So to save you some time...here are my thoughts from that thread Ivangene called out:

It was *NOT* great. A replacement engine cost them $25K in parts and labor.

They DID NOT want to pay that. The warranty company - in fine print, - has the right to replace a part with "Like / Kind Quality" - They wanted to buy a USED engine from a dismantler.

That's right. They have that right. If I don't like it, I can pay the difference between the used engine and a new engine from Porsche. Well, the used engine they had from LKQ a dismantler was $15K. The new engine from my dealer (well re-man) was a couple K more. I paid the difference - but frankly I thought it was worth it because I have a new engine, with new coils, plugs, wires, alternator, AOS, waterpump - all the crap that on an 8 year old car is bound to let go soon.

So, was the aftermarket warranty worth it? Yes and No. If I didn't have one, maybe a cheaper route would be to do a LN bearing upgrade.

Anyway, I have a new engine, new CATS courtesy of Porsche goodwill, and new tires - I am feeling good.

I paid $4K for my warranty.
I paid $4K in repairs my stupid warranty DIDN'T cover.
I paid $2K in the difference between what the warranty paid for, and what the dealer charged.

So I'm out $10K in the last 2 yrs.

I could have changed the IMS bearing as a preventative for $2K
I could have changed the AOS and Alternator and Water pump as preventative for another $2K.
Total $4K.

This is MY EXAMPLE and YMMV.

But right now I have a new engine that comes complete with a new AOS, new waterpump, new EVERYTHING so I'm not going to dwell on it any longer and enjoy my new Porsche.

I did quite a bit of due diligence prior to me buying the warranty. The one I have will pay claims until they have paid out the NADA retail value of the car.
I had an adjuster and a service writer talk on a 3 way call so there would be no guessing if the IMS Grenades.
Do what I did and get piece of mind. Talk to your local Porsche dealer service advisor, they are the one that get stuck on hold getting claim approval from the warrant companies, they will tell you which warranty companies pay claims and which don't, thats what I did because they didn't have a product to sell me for my '99. I found one on a service writers recommendation and bought it locally.
Best of luck to you man.

Put $2k into the IMS replacement and fix the lesser things if/as they need it.

I hope you have better luck than me. I did the SAME thing you did. Had the svc manager speak with the supervisor from the after market warranty company. I then BOUGHT THE WARRANTY through my selling dealer - Porsche of Danbury (yes, a bonafide official Porsche dealer) and I can tell you that the warranty company is in the business of reducing / eliminating their payout from my experience....ANY excuse to get out of paying. And oh btw: the service advisors hate them because they tie up customer cars in their bays for weeks/months.

AND lastly - remember their "LKQ" policy - like kind quality - means they can install a used part / used engine.

Agreed, this is the most practical route.

I agree with above - if you are concerned: have Jake do the "major maintenance upgrade" (seals/clutch/waterpump/plugs/wires/...) and you should be carefree for years.

In fact, I am thinking of having it done next year.

Thank you everyone for your input. As recommended by many, I am going to bypass the warranty and just get the IMS procedure done this winter when i'll be using the beauty sparingly due to the snow. While i'm in there, i'll likely replace the clutch, etc. as well. Hopefully i won't have any problems before than. Thanks again.
