well, i was looking at the trees on the side of the road, and as best i can tell the manual says third is good for 101 or so..... maybe it was only 99! beautiful sound. so much fun.

3rd is a great gear. Try it in a turbo. The only problem is the redline comes too fast. Woooo Hoooo!
Actually, 4th isn't half bad either. Anywhere between 45 and 115 is just awsome when you put your foot in it.

I really like how 3rd gear sounds during shifts also, both from 2nd and into 4th. That said, I remember driving a 600hp Corvette and going back into a 996, I literally thought something was wrong w/the car. :/
On the other hand, I used to have a Subaru WRX which fell on it's face in 3rd gear, 996s are a lot more linear and feel like they're still pulling OK up there.

I find myself enjoying 2nd gear more especially when driving on the streets. For the track 3rd is more fun but it's tough to find a road that lets you wind out 3rd gear completely to redline.

I concur, 3rd is a great gear to open the car up in. But, I was just noticing how the car pulls in ALL gears, including 5th! As long as you are over 3k on the big gauge in the center of the dash, all is good!

Ferd....I did a DE at Road America....4 miles of fun with 2 very long straights. On the front straight I was in 4th about 128 MPH and more road to go and went to 5th. Holy geebus! The car went to a different level and I got hypnotized watching the speedo. 131, 135, 139 and than a quick brake and downshift to make the turn. Just WOW! I have to agree with you.

well i suppose one cannot complain with any gear. agreed it is difficult to pull to the top of even third on the open road without risk... on the other hand it apears that squirts of throttle can move you rather quickly. a bit of highway, a clear shot, third to fourth, run for a bit, throttle off, back it down. dont you love it?
