2004 996 Carrera base (21k miles) uses 1 qt oil every 4-5k miles
I bought my '04 Carrera base (no S, no Turbo, no Targa, no 4, etc.) at 17K miles.
I've driven it for 4k miles over the past 8 months. Never tracked but every now and then it gets up to 4,000 rpms because I'm not used to a car being able to go from low rpms to high rpms that quickly.
Other than that I drive it fairly gently.
I noticed the oil gauge was low and this morning when I checked the oil I found that it was nearly an entire quart low so naturally I replaced the oil.
I always thought that higher mileage engine would burn off oil but not one with relatively low mileage.
Is this something I should be concerned about?

OH BOY
havent you been reading...........
sorry I dont mean to burst your bubble... you need a reality check. Your car likes to be driven. You should spin the motor up above 6k RPM's (after a proper warm up) EVERY DRIVE !! -
as for oil consumption, some Porsches use a little oil, its normal. Dont "top it off" in my car I normally never ran above the 1/2 way mark on the electronic indicator... leave a little head room, it wont hurt it.
Check for signs of use might include an AOS so check the tailpipes, they should be dry... if they are... then its just the way it is.
but seriously, you need to run that motor... it will start to act better and will most likely stop using oil.
I really dont know how else to say it... DRIVE IT - not trying to be rude...but you are going to regret "driving it gently" Its the worst possible thing you can do to that poor car IMO

It is normal for a 911 to consume some oil. How much is too much? I believe Porsche states normal oil consumption is up to 1qt./600miles. (I may be a little off on the number as the dealer's tech told me 3-4 years ago.) Mine is somewhere around 1qt./3000mi.
That aside, I'm disturbed to read that you never get the car above 4000 rpm! >4k is where all the power is located not to mention the glorious sound of the flat-6. You have yet to experience what this car is all about. Now get out there and bang against the rev limiter once or twice!

I would suggest you develop a habit of checking the oil level more often and topping up the oil level before it gets real low.
And if you're comfortable with it pushing the car a bit harder. No need to get all crazy and mental with the car I mean they are powerful and one can get into trouble pretty quick if he doesn't respect the car but running the rpms over 4K once in a while ain't going to hurt anything, but ... maybe oil consumption and fuel mileage.
High rpm running can increase oil consumption a bit but unless you redline the engine all the time probably not enough for you to notice.
Also, mind you pay attention to the oil change schedule.
Sincerely,
Macster.

ok folks, I get it
and I agree, I should be tarred and feathered! I'll ask for leniency being a first time owner tho.
I will start revving it up and burning gas and oil but since the ladies can barely wait til we get home at 3k rpm, I'm only afraid they won't be able to stay put at 5k rpm

ATTA BOY !!
as Macster stated it is a differant world so learning to control the car so when the ponies get to rev'n if can be done safely is very important...work up to it and dont do anything you are not comforatble doing...and surely nothing un-safe
there are lots of car control clinics and drivers skills events as well as DE's that would give you a wealth of learing in short order and would definantly not hurt or abuse your car (and as for the driving more vigorously, you dont want to abuse it by all means)
have fun, be safe, use some oil
