Question Mirror reverse trick?

Hey guys,

Somewhere on the interweb I read that if I set my seat memory with the (manual) transmission in reverse, the passenger side mirror will automatically lower when I put the car in reverse.

I tried it, but it didn't work.

Is this folklore, or did I do something wrong?

Cheers,
-- Mike

Do the instructions mention setting the tilt with the car in reverse?

Yup. Here's the steps I'm following.

1. Get in the car.
2. Turn the key on (don't start the engine, though, 'cuz I ain't going anywhere right this second).
3. Put the shift lever in reverse.
4. Fiddle with the seats and mirrors until they're where I want them.
5. Set memory position 1 for the seats by holding down the M and 1 buttons.
6. Take the car out of reverse.

Now, when I put the car in reverse, the mirror should go down ... right?

Cheers,
-- Mike

Mine does it as well. Although, it sometimes forgets that it was programmed that way and I have to reset it. I have followed the directions in the Owners Manual but it seems like sometimes it sets it and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong but it does eventually get set so it drops when in reverse.

I've always set mine with the car running so that seems to be the only difference between what you wrote and what I do to get mine to work.

If you follow those steps and its still not working your reverse switch on the transmission is likely bad. You can confirm this by having someone check that your reverse lights come on when you put it in reverse. The switch is inexpensive and very easy to replace if this turns out to be your problem.

Uber: good thought. I'll check tonight ... should be easy with the car in the garage and the door closed.

Mine works great. It is one of those cool little things that I love about the 996.

Now if I can just get my darn rain sensor to work properly... I have a bad board, I think. Hey, I guess that means that my intermittent wipers work intermittently...

My side mirror adjustment works when the three different memory bottons are pushed. It does not toggle down when in reverse. My manual says the dealer needs to activate this "reverse" feature for you.

Or just program the other numbers to have the mirrors go down.... When needed just hit that number. My memory seats went away when I put gt3 seats in.

As I remember this is a dealer programmable option. I think you need the PST2 or the newer dealer tool.

Yes, if when you have the car in reverse the mirror is tilted down where you want it while in reverse. It won't just tilt because you set the memory while the car is in reverse. Figure it as each numbered position has two parts. The standard driving memory and the optional reverse setting.
